Well worth the grazed knuckles. Great improvement over the factory fitted bulbs.

I upgraded to Osram Nightbreakers today. According to the manual, you should remove the top cover over the airpipe and the upper part of the airpipe (battery side). Doing so, there's lot of working space, and changing the H7 was easy. But putting the upper part of the airpipe back on to the lower wasn't easy. I'm fact, I gave up fitting it properly... Had the battery out as well, but the lower pipe is surrounded with electric cables and very close to the chassis, so I could not manage sticking the rubber hose on the upper pipe back into place on the lower pipe properly.

I guess I should not drive too long with this misfitting? I believe I need a trip to the dealer to have it fitted properly again. Any opinions?

Visited the dealer today, a bit embarrased because of this... The mechanic looking at my car lubricated the parts (all rubber) with some sillicone and - after several minutes fiddling and svearing about the placement of the cables and the manual suggesting that one should remove this upper air pipe - finally managed to get it back together

Just changed my side lights for LEDs and H7s for Philips Extreme today and would like to record a big vote of thanks to the original poster for his "How To". It was really useful and saved me ages in trying to work out what was where and how it came apart. Took me 40 minutes start to finish.

I agree that the cooling side one was a real bugger to get at and have the skinned knuckles to prove it!

Not hugely impressed with the Philips bulbs yet, although they are noticeably whiter. I reckon the next task is to adjust the beams upwards to get the full advantage.

I just followed this guide to change the driver's side bulb. Managed to do it without disconnecting any cables which made the reassembly job much easier. Took me a while to work out how to unclip/re-clip the bulb in place though! If anyone has a close-up pic of that it will make things much easier for people in future IMO.

D2R bulbs

Hi Guyz!

Anyone here have a standard HID... and how did you replaced it?

I tried... but I think there is something like a clip and 2 volts to unscrew to access the bulbs....... not sure tho

So I decided..... H dealer will do it!

how the hell anyone manages to change the H7 bulbs is beyond me! I've spent 2 hours trying to change my bulbs, managed to change the H1, interior & sightlight bulbs no problem, but trying to get your hand in to change the H7 bulb is impossible! I'm just going to stick with my ultra white 360 led sidelights & crappy yellow dipped headlight as I've gave up & i'm not going to a dealers to get ripped off

Replacing HID bulbs on the 1.8 ex petrol models 2006>

**safety first**
due to the amount of power that these HID bulbs need to fire up, best to remove the earth off the battery or remove the HID bulbs fuse.

LHS (battery side)

1. Open the bonnet.
2. No need to move the battery. unclip the earth battery cable from it's mounting bracket. move the cable away.
3. pull the two black stud fixings on the secondary air feed pipe, this is fixed to the side of the inner wing (black pipe directly behind the headlight cover)
4. un-clip the hose from a mounting lug, to the side of the pipe and gently pull upwards, this only slips over another rigid air pipe lower down. and remove from the car.
5. Just remove the black plastic cover by turning anti-clockwise. (TIP: be careful not to drop the cover)
6. Remove the electrical connector by twisting anti-clockwise off the back of the bulb, this will then release off the bulb.
7. you will see the bulb bracket that holds the HID bulb in place, it is held in place with two torx-bit screws, T10 or T15, not too sure on the size. a short torx screwdriver will be handy for this.
8. only undo the screws by two turns, the bracket will be loose and twist the bracket and you should be able to Remove the bracket and bulb together. this will only twist one way, it is keyed.
9. always handle the bulb by its base, avoid contact with your hands.
10. swap over the bulbs, like for like, be careful not to drop the bulb out of the bracket when out of the car.
11. when inserting the bulb and bracket, you will find that the holes are keyed and fit over the torx screws. twist the bracket and fasten up the screws.
12. re-connect the electrical connector by twisting clockwise.
13. now test the lights, becare full not to touch any part of the electrical cables when the bulbs are on.
14. if ok, re-fit the black plastic bulb cover.
15. re-fit the hose, a small dash of washing up liquid will be handy for this to slide over the rigid plastic hose at the bottom. re-fit the black stud fixings as before.
16. re-fit the earth cable back onto it's mounting bracket.

RHS (expansion tank side)

1. Same method as LHS above except you do NOT need to remove anything to get to the bulb, an easy one to do!

allow for 30mins to do, maybe more if it's your first time and you still remove some skin off the back of your hand

with a bit of luck, darkness will fade, yet again

First of all, many thanks for the "How to" - it helped a lot, when I had to change (and upgraded) the bulb(s), but (you know there is always a but ) could please someone tell me how to remove the clip on the coolant tube.

I tried for around 15 minutes, well apparently not hard enough, but I didn't want to damage something - had the expansion tank out but without removing the coolant tube, there was just not enough space... So could you guys give me a some advice how to remove this stupid clip, without doing any damage, P L E A S E !

The bulb on the side of the battery was changed quickly, luckily it was the one, that was broken - only now one of the bulbs is more bright than the other one, well it's annoying and I wanna resolve it.

P.S. My neighbour (male) saw me, while I was trying and asked what I was doing, after I explained, he just said go to the workshop. And I stood there literally speechless and just thought, 'Yeah, exactly I go to a workshop just to have some damn bulb changed.' - Well I may have to go, if you guys can't help me...
But come on I' m maybe a woman, but this doesn't mean I can't change a bulb on my car - these are things you could - and IMO should - do on your own, shouldn't you?

Many many thanks in advance, and yes I am very ashamed, that I couldn't figure it out by mayself.

P.P.S. Sorry again for the long post, but I'm a woman, you know talking, well writing and writing endlessly...

Just use some pliers to squeeze the ends together which in turn opens the clip.

To be honest though, I don't know if it's worth it as you still can't move the expansion tank very much further out of the way with the coolant tubes removed

Thanks for your help!
So I'll give it another shot on the weekend - first again without removing the clips, maybe with more patience it'll work this time. I'm actually a little bit overanxious with this clips I mean they don't look that solid and to remove them wont make it better, I guess...

Just thought I would post up here as I have just changed my first lot of bulbs since having my CTR.

I was a little apprehensive at first after hearing that people struggled to change them but thought I would give it a go anyway.

I changed my dipped beam (H7) and my sidelights (501).

All I can say is I hope every job I have to do on the car is as easy as this!

I think it took me about 10 mins max to changes both sets and most of that was moving the covers out of the way!

So anyone that has heard horror stories fear not, give it a go you'll probably find its a lot easier than you thought!

I changed my bulbs the other day, my wrists now resemble those of a self harmer.. ouch. I can also confirm that this is the one job I found difficult with these nails Lol.

Good "how to" though

Changing 4300K's to 6000k's - FAILED

Tried this afternoon for around 3 hrs to change my bulbs over and thought I would attempt the battery side first. What a job....managed to remove the bulb with some difficulty and scratches and cuts to hand then dropped bulb into lower compartment which I managed to rescue. Then I took a look at the expansion tank side and then decided to call it a day as the there just isn't enough room. Too many solid pipes and tubes in the way.

Just fitted the original bulb back on the battery side...which was tricky enough.

Is there no easy way to remove the light clusters to do this job???. From the sounds of things the Petrol engines seem to be easier to do this mod on than my 2.2.

Will see if my local Stealer can do this for me on the next service.
