[HOW TO] Manually switch on the Reversing Camera

This ‘How To’ will allow you to manually switch on your reversing camera (If fitted) without the need for engaging reverse.

When the switch is pressed, the Navigation System is fooled into thinking the car is in reverse gear and switches on the rear view camera. The circuit also prevents the reversing lights from coming on.

Whilst this is an easy modification, you will need some basic soldering skills and be prepared to take most of the dashboard apart to gain access to the rear of the Navigation unit.

Have fun.....

Bog,

Can you explain where abouts the factory fitted nav unit is. Is it in the glove box? How do you get access to replace the DVD?

I ask because I am looking for somewhere to mount my kenwood unit.

Thanks

Yes, it's accessed via the glove box. If you look at the second drawing in my PDF you can make out where the front of the Navi unit would be (Single DIN, just below the upper mouting screws.)

I see you're fooling the Sat-Nav into thinking you're in reverse.
Has anyone tried this on an I-Shift ? Is there any risk the car might do something else as if it's in reverse ?

My old punto once developed a problem where it thought it was in reverse (on the motorway no less) and would start doing it's reverse 'beeping' and flashing up "R" on the dashboard. I wouldn't want a repeat of this.

I doubt it as the reversing lights circuit is isolated by the switch to ensure the reversing lights don't come on! The Nav unit only uses the feed to switch over the video source.

BEWARE
Engaging the camera using this mod will completely fool the GPS system.
If you drive < 50km/h the GPS system will think that you are driving in the oposite direction! I noticed it can take minutes before the GPS/map is correct again.

Hi, i'm new here and i'm gonna try install an audio-video system and, of course, i'm interested in this mod.
Since i don't like cutting original cables and connectors, does anyone know number of the connector that should be cutted?
