Prior to selecting a rearview camera, I fed the satnav with a standard
TV PAL-I interlaced composite signal and also an NTSC signal.

The display for the PAL signal was the correct width but the bottom approx' 15% of the input was not displayed, same as jupdio's photos.

The NTSC signal was fully displayed but with a border all around of approx' 6mm.

Also, I couldn't find any way of controlling the brightness for the RV input, the nornal brightness control does not apply.

Interesting that the NTSC works, I assumed it would not work!

I think the only way of controling the brightness would be via the source.

I'm someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the display's resolution is 300 lines (whick is the same a the majority of the cheap cams on ebay)

Bog,

Thanks for the reply, here's an update.
Today I used a DVD player as source and was surprised by the results.

Using PAL, again the bottom say 15% of the picture is not displayed.

Using NTSC, the picture was perfect. I think the previous attempt at NTSC which gave a reduced size picture was due to the way the computer output the picture.

I am tempted to conclude that the satnav can handle both PAL and NTSC, but NTSC is the better. It only displays 480 lines (NTSC standard), and not the 576 required by PAL.

I am ordering a Pioneer ND-BC2 camera, which is NTSC.

Excellent work pcr,

So any source that is less than 480 lines should work.

I've been playing today too! NTSC fits the screen perfectly.

I was also thinking of a way to power an AV source or reversing cam, so that it cam on when the switch is operated.

The attached circuit is how I've done it (sorry about the bad drawing, but it is nearly midnight!)

001.jpg

I have tried it and it works. It will allow me to switch on the reversing cam independently of the reversing lights.

I also plan to incorporate a video switch to allow me to swap sources.

Hope this helps.

You have made a pukka job of the works, Are you using NTSC?? This is what the camera throws out to the screen, have checked with Alpine... Thats y PAL isnt to be used!!!

hi, for the sound im using this:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWN:IT&ih=005

for the video i followed the link to the usa forum where some one had connected the video to the satnav box using a plug, which i went for as no soldering to the nav box.

have a good read through the thread like i need and you will get all the info you need now ive done the job and add the pics of where ive put the inputs needed.

no control box is needed, just a switch and 1 diode, i used 2 diodes but you can get away with one.

the hardest part is stripping everything down and putting it back.

im now glad i went for the EX as ive now got what i wanted from day one.

Hi gray...
Do you use the box you have for an IPOD connection and does this pass track info down the Bus connection to the stereo/nav display??
I m keen to develop something that will do this for us!

I am planning to make a small cricuit to display the rear cam while driving FW. (using the rear defroster pushbutton).
My only concern is that when the car is moving forward and you "fool" the unit that it is in reverse, the NAVIGATION system is using this info also to detect if the car is moving backwards (to correct the car position).
Anyone had problems with camera ON while using NAVIGATION.?

Yes it does get abit confused, but soon sorts itself out! Annoying, but a small price to pay

Thanks Bog, I think to make a circuit that turns on the camera for 1min after pressing the mirror/rear defrost button, hope 1 min will not confuse the NAV a lot...

i dont think you will use the camera that much when driving forwards, its very distracting and it will do your head in. (had this on another car)

im more than happy that it switches automaticly when i select reverse. i can now back up close to walls, other cars etc but i still use my mirrors and pdc as before. the camera is a nice touch.

BEWARE
Engaging the camera using this mod will completely fool the GPS system.
If you drive < 50km/h the GPS system will think that you are driving in the oposite direction! I noticed it can take minutes before the GPS/map is correct again.

You can test this easily:
1- Remove the backup bulbs
2- Connect (if you want using a switch) the back up bulb socket brown wire to the +12V (sigaret lighter..) and the camera will turn on during driving.
