Lightbulb A solution to connect DVD-Players and Game consoles to the Navigation Screen

Hello,

In my Manual for the Rear Camera System I found the following Information about the camera connector Pins :

Red: VCC
Black: GND
Brown: Shield
Blue: Camera detection
White: Video GND
Yellow: Video

The pre-installed camera has an standard Video output Signal (PAL) so i thought to myself it must possible to connect other devices to the Navigaton-Unit...

To enable the Camera Input you only need to connect the camera detection (blue cable) to GND (black cable). Next step is to connect any video source to the Video Input (Yellow and White cable). I will make photos of the wiring next days.

You can also connect any kind of devices or cameras with a PAL Video output Signal (NTSC will work too but only in black&white)

So, here are my results:

Nav_Screen_01.jpg

Insert DVD Pirates of the Caribbean...

Nav_Screen_02.jpg

Watching King of Queens...

Nav_Screen_03.jpg

Nav_Screen_04.jpg

A Playstation works fine too...

Nav_Screen_05.jpg

Nav_Screen_06.jpg

What about to connect an old portable Commodore 64 to play games if you're in a traffic jam? Wow, what an retro feeling...

That is really good! Especially like the idea of playing 'Mission: Impossible' - just shows you that nothing actually is !

Will you rig it so that there are audio inputs available as well? maybe so the audio L/R and the video IN are together in one place, together with the camera toggle switch...

Hi LoonyJohn,

the Audio Signals goes directly to the amps in the back of my car. I think there is no Audio Input in the Navigation Unit .

Wiring Part 1

At first, I cut through the camera cable and soldered connectors (9pin D-Sub) at both ends of the cable.

Nav_Cable_01.jpg

Nav_Cable_02.jpg

So we have an 'plugable' system...

Nav_Cable_03.jpg

For testing we need a simple Adapter which will support one Chinch-connector and enables the camera detection (At later time an electronic circuit should automatically switch between the camera and other signals).

Nav_Cable_04.jpg

...now we can connect any Video Signal, like this C64DTV Game Joystick
The Audio Signals will be connected directly to the amps installed in the back of the car.

Good work ! But is it safe to drive the Civic with a Comodore joystick ?

So at the moment you cannot have both system, rear Camera and another video source ?

Last question, did you buy the Honda genuine reverse camera or is it a third part one ?

Good work Jupdio,

I've been working on a similar project over the past few days, except mine is for EX's without a reversing camera. I plan to add a video switch so that I can flip between the video source (DVD, Car PC etc.) and self installed reversing cam. ('How to' to follow shortly)

Looking at your set up, I assume you can only view your video source when in reverse gear. I have created a 'How to' which enables you to switch on the video source without the need for engaging reverse. Have a look here

I notice Jupdio is having the same problem as me, getting the video image centered on the screen. Some sources are better than others, does anyone have any advice?

can you have this and the rearf camera?

this is amazing - so basically you can just have a wire and attach any dvd or console player at will?

also no audio? thats a slight pain

@l-noel:

yes, at the moment i can use only one Video source. I actually design a electronic circuit which will automatically switch between the rear camera and other Video Signals.

I have the original Honda Camera installed

@Bog:

i used the same cable (the brown one) for enabling the video source without engaging reverse. Same as you do in your great How to. I implemented a Diode in the brown cable to ensure that the rear camera have first priority. I'll make some Photos the next days and draw a circuit diagram.

To the picture: Yes, the picture is not centered on the screen. Maybe there is a adjustment in the Nav Menu or we have to use an additionally electronic circuit to do discard the first lines of the picture!?

I would be very interested in seeing your circuit.

Again, very interested in seeing you circuit diagram and photo's. Where did you place the diode?

No adjustment screens in the Nav Diag Menu's specificly for the camera/video source that I could see. In fact when in 'video in' mode, you can't access any menu's.

Info Needed

Hi,
Read your info on this, i need to know, do you connect the blue wire from the green connector to the black on this same connector, and then have the video feed on the yellow and white wire. Also can you buy this connector from Honda, as my car doesnt have the camera fitted.

Yes it is PAL, I've tested it here.

Wiring Part 2

Here my solution how to enable the Camera Input without need to engaging reverse:

First i implemented a Diode (1N4007) to the brown cable. The negative electrode (the ring on one side) is connected to the navigation Unit.

Then i soldered a second Diode (1N4007) to the new green cable for the remote Switch to turn on the camera manually. The negative electrode is connected to the navigation Unit side too.

The new red cable is +12V and connected to the purple cable (Battery voltage at ACC1).
So when I connect the red and the green cable the camera turns on

The yellow cable is added for the electronic circuit (video switch box) which will switch between camera and other video sources (next step, come soon)

Why the Diodes?

The Diodes ensure that the positive voltage only goes from the manual switch or the back-up light switch to the navigation unit. This should prevent damage in the Car electronics and the Video switch box.

Schematics:

Nav_Cable_06.jpg

The Diodes...

Nav_Cable_07.jpg

Get +12V from the purple cable

Nav_Cable_08.jpg

All cables isolated...

@stevevt:

Sure, you can use the photos and the text to translate.

@poejay:

...do you connect the blue wire from the green connector to the black on this same connector, and then have the video feed on the yellow and white wire...

Yes, that's right. This is how it works.
But I don't know if it's possible only to buy the cable from honda (without the camera)

Thanks Jupdio, this great. Your schematics image is not loading? - Could be my browser?

I understand the diode being there to protect your future switch box, but it's not really needed to protect the car's electronics, as the brown wire is only connected to the reversing lights. So if you send 12v up the brown wire, the worst that will happen is the reversing lights will come on.

Hi Bog,

you're right, the reverse lights come on if the diode is missing.
But the most importand thing is the high power that will flow through the new circuit when the reverse lights come on (approx. 3,5 Ampere!)
That's what i mean to prevent from damage.

Ahhh yes, Schemtics should now work
