Connect alarm LED to side mirrors LED's

I found the alarm indicator LED useless like it is hidden in the instruments panel. No way you can see it from outside.

My sollution was to use the side mirror LED indicators, also as alarm indicator.
- Makes the Alarm LED realy visible
- Scares burglers
- Makes the car visible when parked in the dark
- Includes also dimmed side indicators during driving.
- My circuit consumes only 30mA during LED activation
- No electrical contact with car electronics ( use of optical sensor near the original alarm LED, at the back of the instruments)

Will post a how to soon here. Unfortunately it will require some serious skills in electronics.

Here is a movie what to expect:

Is there more than 1 led within the wing mirror, if so, would it be possible to subsitute one for a dual coulour LED that when the arm is on it flashes red and when not on it remains yellow. Now that would be the dogs danglies.

The LEDs in the mirrors are not accesible, there are 3 inside+ resistor.
My circuit also makes the mirror LEDs slightly ON (dimmed) during driving (when ignition is ON) acting as side indicators.
Of course the original turn signal indication remains unganged.

Oh, unfortunately In the UK, we cant have the indicators illuminated as our sidelights have to be white, not yellow

The main front and rear indicators can't be illuminated constantly in the UK, but it is legal to have positioning lights at the side of a vehicle. Volvo's have these, as do BMW's. The latest 5 series has 5 orange LED's where the headlamp assembly wraps around the front of the car.

Correction on the HOW to,
The Phototransistor is
L-932P3C from Kingbright or
L-32P3C (i think this is the same but new number)
(Thanks Gringo11 for pointing this out in your message)

Lightbulb

This is a fantastic idea and could be used on any car, make or model with intigrated alarm LED. If you didn't wish to connect it to the mirrors or cut into existing wires, then you could connect it to some extra Dash, Window or Console mounted LED units.

If fitting to LED's within the cabin, then don't fit resistors R1 and R2 and the LED won't glow as you drive.

This circuit could also be used to connect Footwell Ambient LED Lighting to the curtesy light, without chopping into the existing wiring. This would allow the lights to come on with the doors opening, but would also run when the ignition is on. Fantastic. Just use R1 and R2 in the circuit to alter the intensity for driving and R6 and R7 to alter the brightness for getting in and out of the car.

Thanks Stef. The circuit is pure Genius and has so many more applications within the vehicle.

Mad Scientist award for you I think! MadProf.gif

Indeed an alternate use it to mount a bright LED in the plastic cover of the Wiper/autolights detection circuit behind the readview mirror.
This was my first idea, but then I tought about the side mirrors...
