How to fit an aftermarked reversing camera to an aftermarked head unit

I know a few of these exist, but not specifically for fitting an aftermarked reversing camera to an aftermarket head unit, so heres what I did:-

This was done on my 57 plate Civic Type R, the head unit is a Pioneer AVIC-F930BT.

I bought the full double din conversion kit from Impulse car audio http://www.impulsecar.co.uk/product_details.php?productid=MjE=

Bob from Impulse gave me the following tips:
Fitting the 103mm cage kit
1. Cut out the little piece of plastic on the corner of the dash where the original radio housing fitted. This will then allow the new fascia to fit.
2. Place cage in fascia and check if the trim ring will fit through the four corners. Cut the plastic if necessary (see image) then bend tabs to hold the cage in place
3. Screw side plates to head unit using hole number 2 marked on the plate (top and bottom) with the copper coloured piece located into slots 17 and 19 beneath the plate.
4. Check that the head unit locks into the cage at the correct depth.

The pic below shows how the chassis connection plates are attached to the double din head unit.

Once the standard head unit has been removed (see the excellent attachment in Bog`s thread) http://www.civinfo.com/forum/how/51366-how-install-aftermarket-reversing-camera-easy-way.html, the bottom left corner of the dash needs cutting out square, in order for the double din chassis to fit, as per pic below.

Click the image to open in full size.

Connect the replacement double din wiring loom (instructions are provided from Impulse). If a reversing camera is to be fitted (I bought the YW cam from MrBozo) http://www.civinfo.com/forum/civinfo-traders/51600-sale-reverse-cameras.html
then connect the yellow AV cable which comes with the cam, to the brown 'rear view camera in' connector.
The yellow AV cable will be run to the reversing light.

Click the image to open in full size.

A wire also needs to be connected to the 'reverse gear signal input' which will be run to the reversing light.

Click the image to open in full size.

With the knee panel removed, run both cables behind the dash, and behind the back of the boot release plastic.

Click the image to open in full size.

Then pull to remove the plastic trim adjacent to the kick plate garnish, and run both the cables along the edge of the carpet.

Click the image to open in full size.

Lift the rear seat cushion up and pull to remove the plastic inspection panel by the seatbelt. Run the cables into this space.

Click the image to open in full size.

Remove the rear arm rest to expose the rear speaker as shown in Munro`s thread http://www.civinfo.com/forum/how/9294-rear-speakers-replacement-coaxials-3-door.html
, pull the cables through here.

Click the image to open in full size.

Now pull the panel away from the body, and run the cables through here.

Click the image to open in full size.

Now drop the rear seat forward, and pull the rear panel away from the body, feed the cables through this space towards the rubber grommet at the top of the boot.

Click the image to open in full size.

Pull to remove the grommet, and feed the cables through the hole.

Click the image to open in full size.

I had to cut the yellow AV cable approx 12" from the end, as its head is too large to get through the grommet and cavity, this will be re-attached later. I pushed a metal bar through the grommet, taped the cables to the bar, and pulled the lot through the grommet.

Click the image to open in full size.

In order to route the cables through the side cavity of the boot, I pushed a length of TV co-axial cable through, taped the cables to it, and pulled it back through

Click the image to open in full size.

The red power cable from the reversing camera, and the cable which is connected to the 'reverse gear signal input' were terminated in a pin connector as per pic below (note: the black ground cable from the reversing camera is not used at all).

Click the image to open in full size.

I then inserted the pin connector into the back of the reversing bulb plug, into the brown coloured wire. The end of the previously cut yellow AV cable will now need to be re attached (by soldering or chocky block connector etc).

Click the image to open in full size.

The reversing camera is screwed in position adjacent the rear number plate light.

Click the image to open in full size.

The reversing light assembly is removed by unbolting the 3 nuts behind the bulb inspection panel in the boot, the reversing camera cables are then fed behind the centre panel into this hole.

Click the image to open in full size.

A cable sized notch needs cutting into the removed light cluster, in order for it to sit flush when re-fitted.

Click the image to open in full size.

The reversing camera cables are fed into the boot, and the light cluster re-attached, ensuring the cables go into the notch.

Click the image to open in full size.

Join the colour coded connectors together, tidy the cables up, and re-fit any panels etc and admire your handy work.

Forum member MrBozo sells various styles of reversing camera, I chose YW style (check out the 'traders' forum). It was simply screwed to the underside of the panel using the supplied screws.

It really isn't that difficult, but it is quite time consuming. It's probably best to have a go when there's more light and warmer than it is at the moment though lol

Have you had any problems with it since fitting?/
Mine a factory fit system. Blew clock/ac display up. Honda replaced and it blew up again. Called Honda headquarters to find out known problem thats now factory cured with a 'can'? that sits between satnav and clock.

Can you make voice controlled calls with yours or have you to use the touch screen to dial out. Advertised as a HFT system but not to mke if reaching across to touch screen to dial.

It is a nice system but software to download POI's mainly for europe. All the POI's I had in my tomtom lost as cant transfer.

Never had any problems with the clock.
Didn't know you you could make calls without touch screen (never read the manual lol).
The only POI's I used are the UK speed cameras.

I found an alternative route for the revearse camera cable that takes 2 minutes to fit front to back ...

The cable wil tuck in behind the airbag /roof lining along the top of the door rubbers and exit exactly where you want it at the boot rubber ..
