Fitting space saver.
Several members have posted questions about fitting a space saver. I fitted one last week, so here is a simple guide...
If you buy space saver with the fitting kit, you get a long threaded bold with a wing nut type top, and metal cap and 3 large blocks of foam rubber about 3 inches along each side, one slimmer than the other 2. These stick onto the floor with the slimmer block closest to the rear of the car, for the wheel to rest onto. Next feel with your fingers for a slight bump on the floor near where the centre of the wheel will be; where the fixing bolt will screw into. Cut the carpet at this spot. Underneath you should find a black plastic blanking cover (about the size of a 2p piece, slotted for a plain screw driver) that screws out revealing a threaded hole for the bolt. With the wheel resting (front down) on the foam blocks the wheel should be able to be screwed down nice and tight. Looking at the picture you can make out the marks my wheel made on them, so should give you an idea of their position included are a big plastic bag to hold the regular wheel in and a cargo net to hold it all on place as you drive to quick fit (or where ever) You can see the bolt and cap in the attached JPG. I assume that if you don't have one, (you only have the wheel, without the rest of the kit) a visit to a hard wear store should allow you to source a suitable replacement. The foam blocks are crushable to make sure the wheel fit is snug. Last edited by shinybadrobot; 25th March 2012 at 20:52. |

Strange.
When I got my second Civic it was easy to remove the foam pads and refit in the new one. Just got some new double sided sticky tape. I did take measurements so I put the pads in the same place but I didn't keep them. |

Not at all, It is as tight as a tight thing. The foam blocks help by compressing, and pushing up. I guess that is what they are for.

Citroen decided to just put the spare in a boot well on the C5 and it used to bounce around quite noticeably. I ended up wrapping the whole thing in a blanket to muffle it.

Yes it does slide about a bit, from side to side. Also if you want to get paranoid in the event of a really bad accident it could fly out and cause injury, if not secured

I just bought a second hand spacesaver with the long wing nut retaining bolt. No foam blocks or anything and its fixed down secure, not moving or bouncing around or anything so if anyone gets one dont think they are necessary.

Space-saver installed
I did it a lot faster, bought a new wheel/tire at Honda, opened up the the boot, lifted up the cover, threw the wheel in and closed it again. Its already there and ready when i need it.
