How to install a Japspeed Shortshifter

Here is the kit you will receive when you order your shortshifter. There are a couple of people who sell this exact same kit, Japspeed, Shortshifteruk.

I used Shortshiftuk as he only charged £24 delievered, as Japspeed are chargaing £40 delivered.

Here is the links on ebay for them both

Shortshiftuk:
Honda Civic Type R Si 06-08 Short Shifter Shift Quick | eBay

Japspeed:
JAPSPEED HONDA CIVIC TYPE-R FN2 2006-2010 SHORT SHIFTER KIT 40% QUICKER SHIFT | eBay

Click the image to open in full size.

Right lets get started on how to do this install.

Step 1 - Remove your gear knob like so.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 2 - place your hand at the base of the gear stick and pull up as seen in pic, this will release the plastic surround

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 3 - Now to take out the Armrest and front lower dash, it sounds like its going to be mental but its really simple, Trust me.
1st pull of the 2 blacks caps of the arm rest circled in the pic, you need to do this for both passagner and drivers side. Next unscrew, all 4 bolts.

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 4 - Pull the armrest up from were the lighter is located and remember to bring it up a little as you have to release the lighter connection underneath. Once this is done remove the armrest as seen in the pics.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 5 - Removing the lower front Dash, as seen in the pics remove the 1 cover on the drivers side then remove all 4 push bolts 2 on the drivers side and 2 on the passengers side as indicated in the red circles on the pics. Once done pull out the lower dash. If you have an ipod connection remember to feed it out the hole in the back of the front lower dash pocket.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 6 - Right at the base of the gear stick you need to remove the clip that is holding in the blue plastic ball cover. 1st pull the clip at both sides then pull down to release the black cover. Next get the little tool supplied with your kit to remove the blue cover. Put it behind the blue cover and pull foward and it will pop of as in the pic.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 7 - Remove the bolts as indicated by the red circles also the item in the blue square i also released the clips on this as it made it easier to remove the rubber shift bushes underneath the bolts you have just taken off. Next Push out the metal in the centre of the rubber base bush and then the rubber after.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 8 - Take your metal base bushes and place some white-tac around it as it will help hold it in place when you are installing them. Do this for all three also make sure that the metal bush is facing upright as in pic 1 when installing them.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 9 - Replace the bolts and tighten as indicated in the red circles, and thats that part of the job done

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 10 - Now to install the blue cap on the shortshifter, grease the top of the ball, and then push the blue cap on to the shortshifter or in my case I used a vice as it makes it easier to do. This is not necessary but if you have a vice use it.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 11 - Install the shortshifter to the base of the gearstick making sure that it is fully in the shortshifter, then tighten. Next thing to do is to place the black cover on over the blue cap and also put the gear knob back on as you need to check that it is selecting each gear. When I did this i noticed that it catching on 2nd, 4th, 6th and reverse. So i filed a section away and it was fine.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 12 Replace the clip on the black cover around the blue cap. Then have one final check selecting all the gears, if happy then just reinstall all the bits you have taken off.

Click the image to open in full size.[/quote]

Step 13 - Take the car out for a drive and enjoy the nice gear throw, feels so much better [smilie=karls_thumb.gif]

Thought I would post the guide as so many people were saying there was none for this kit. Such a great little piece of kit for the price, the gear throw feels great now.

Cheers again for the guide mate.

I've just completed this to my original type r shifter (mugen one currently fitted to the car). One thing I would say to people (if they take care) is to take 10-12mm off the top of the lever and extend the thread to the bottom of the lever using a die. This should help with the shorter throws I would have thought?

I'll get some pictures up when I've finished

I completed this on the weekend.

I ended up fitting it to my Mugen shifter and was really easy to fit and has made a HUGE difference

So far I have had no trouble getting it in 3rd gear (usually it was once every drive), been out 3-4 times now and it slots in perfect every time and the throw is so much shorter it's ridiculous

Very cheap and easy mod that everyone should do

Thanks again Stevo

Installed my shortshifter last night. Had a couple of issues, firstly i was trying to install the washes on top rather than underneath, had difficulty getting the original blue cap off (but soon became a pro, and i also ended up filing quite a lot off..

Didn't take many pictures during the install, as i didn't se the point as this how to guide is ful of all the info you need. But...i did take a before and after video!

Correct. It's made the throw even shorter and sharper.

I'd really like to try one of these, but my concerns are with the build quality, long term reliability and insurance implications of such a device?

Defo!

Just trying to find a garage/engineer willing to shorten and die (thread) my gear sharf so the gear knob can sit lower.

Finding it slightly difficult to track someone willing to do it.

Worse case scenario is i'll buy a machine from Machine Mart, but I think I'd prefer someone else to do it for me tbh. Don;t want to knacker the thread completley.

Yes mate, to the original Type R gear shifter not the Mugen one (that is already 10mm shorter). My tap and die set turned up the other day and I've extended the thread further down the shaft now

I would love to help but (believe it or not) I managed to break my hacksaw while chopping the end off just managed to get it off though.

However, I'm sure I'll be able to get hold of some more blades before the weekend (fingers crossed). I'll be about on Sunday if you'd like it doing?
