I would still really like to buy one of these set-ups I'm just not sure where the actualy 'box' goes.
Is it possible to keep it all contained within the door? If not where have you guys that have done this put it?

im fed up with waiting for tr2 so ive gone for bc 639 (maplin code vro6g) and ive looked at the data sheet and is the same for bc635. one thing ive noticed is that the legs (bce) are a different configuration to bc547 (tr1). this could catch you out as both the tr1 and tr2 look the same so you would follow the diagram and fit them the same way. but the bce are on different legs as follows:-

bc547 tr1 1) emitter 2) base (centre leg) 3) collector
bc639 tr2 1) base 2)collector (centre leg) 3) emitter

ive fitted this tr2 as per the diagram and it is now turned a quarter compared to tr1, can someone confirm this is correct? ive pm hgt but have not heard back from him.

Is that right?

You forgot the:

d) by doing this I entirely invalidate the manafacturers warranty with regards to the electrical systems within my car.

how will they know its been done if you remove it before any warrenty work?

just dont open the door on a cyclist (with the mirrors folded in) or you will be facing a big bill of your insurance excess + damage to your door, and it will be your faulty.

if everything works before you start, what is the problem?

I'd assume that at somepoint the plastic sheeting between the door trim and the door would need moving and that somewhere along the line, there would be a break in the wiring to fit the new 'bits'??

You're quite right that sometimes this wont be noticed but if there is any investigation work done with regards to the electrical systems, it will be found.

I'm not knocking the idea but just wanted to point out what these amendments can do. Anyway, whats wrong with pressing the fold-in/fold-out button??

I take your point, and I would expect it to invalidate the warranty on the systems it connects to, IE. mirrors and central locking but not the whole of the electronics systems.
Otherwise where does that leave people that have fitted after market products like,
reversing sensors, ambient lights, led interior lights, different horns, upgraded speakers, fog lights on cars that did not have them, the list goes on.
Honda could pick on the simplest of modifications, just changing a bulb for an led for instance and say the warranty is void on the electrics or even the whole car if it suited them.
I would say that it should be down to the common sense of the dealer concerned, after all they get paid by Honda for the warranty work, why should they say the warranty is void and lose the work.
If my local dealer ever quibbles over my warranty and it looks as though I will have to pay I will simply take the car to another local independent garage that is a whole lot cheaper to have it fixed, and the dealership will have lost out on their warranty claim.
OK so will I but I accept that risk.
I used to work for a company that did warranty work for many electronics companies, and we had many, and I mean many, dubious warranty claims but we never questioned them, as we were paid by the manufacturers for warranty work so warranty work it was.
There is nothing wrong with pressing a button, until you forget and some sod in a car park breaks your mirror.

this goes to nh dan, ive already had my plastic torn and my door card damaged by the honda techs, but i cannot go to the dealer and confront them about this as i would have to removed this myself, then they could say ive done it. catch 22 situation. hgt knows what he is talking about, as he has designed the circuit, built it and figured out the wiring on the car to make it all work. a practical mod is a good mod, and worth fiting and this has been wanted from early on in the forum, along with many others.

plus you can have a little fun with other civic owners, "oh didnt your dealer activate that for you" ask them when its next in for a service.

hgt & gray52 - guys, please dont get me wrong, i'm not needlessly having a dig or poo pooing your mods, all of which as you say are tried and tested and more importantly, seem to be desirable to members of the forum.

Having been in the industry for over 10 years now, i've had the dubious opportunity to see many cars that have had a variety of 'modifications' of massively different qualities. You are quite right that only certain parts of the warranty should become invalidated at all and in general, your mods may make difference at all. Of course a workshop of any quality would be foolish to turn away work either.

I have however seen modifications on cars that have caused faults elsewhere in cars in areas that the layman would not have thought were linked. Parking sensors (non manufacturer parts) fitted to the front of a car that when activated caused a voltage drop across the whole system, ECU and all that was linked, causing error codes, stereo faults and knocked out the electric windows for instance. The customer who had them fitted to save a few £'s was obviously a bit put out when given a bill for the investigation work and the disconnection of his sensors to make all good.

If ANY modification can be attributed to have caused or been part of causing something to malfunction, then the manufacturer is within perfect rights to back out of the warranty.

hi, i fully understand what you are saying. but most mods go wrong because people dont take that bit of extra care to do a proper job, eg using heat shrink to insulte wire, soldering of wires. the amount of people who twist them together then say its blown up as they never tested the wires they were twisting together!!!

got mine fitted today and its spot on! thanks HGT. i had one minor problem and a blonde moment, i will explain:- went to connect the earth wire and nothing. my speaker bolt screws into metal, but is insulted by plastic! i then sourced another earth by connecting to the mirror plug further up the door panel (pic enclosed)

the blonde moment, locked the car, mirrors folded, unlocked the car mirrors folded out, oh yes... then after about 20 sec mirrors fold back in and car locks itself WTF.

just about to rip it all out, when i realised i had not opened the door, as the car auto locks, panic over

another good feature is that if you see your mirrors folded in then your car is locked. ive had a couple of times when ive gone to the car unlocked it only to fine it was already unlocked.

here is the pic of the new earth wire (shown uninsulted):-
