60mpg?
I'm driving to London tomorrow so a fairly long run of about 4 1/2 hours. My current PB MPG is 57.6, obviously on a longish run, but only for a run of about 2 hours or so. I usually drive at 60mph on cruise control (on motorways and NSL roads of course) which seems to be the most economical, without cheating by going stupidly slowly so as not to make progress.
So I'm looking forward to seeing if my PB can be beaten. I'll take a photo of the figure if I manage to beat it. I've probably put the mockers on it now... |

My commute to wory is about 15 miles each way. Yesterday I topped up with fuel after doing 110 miles, and the computer said I had achieved 59.8mpg. I then checked this manually and it came out at 59.5mpg.
Now, I was driving economically and trying to see how good she would be to and from work, but thats a great result. The diesel engine really is a complete delight. |

Down here, in Ibredinthemoor, the price of diesel, is 9p more than petrol.
I am sure, when I bought my car on 01/09/07, it was 2p. Whats going on, apart from the usual rip off. ![]() |

I'm now happily getting 60-62 mpg over a full tank as long as I don't do too much inner city driving. I've posted elsewhere on the forum about my drive but basically it's a return journey from Manchester to North Wales every day.
With a heavy weekend of city driving I average around 56mpg. All in all a very good engine technology that just needs a few more tweaks! |

I average about 35-40mpg wiht usual town driving, I can get closer to 50 on the motorway at 60-65mph with Cruise control. But if I drove like half the old women do round here, (Canterbury I've decided is next to Bexhill on Sea, Britains second largest above ground cemetery), I could make a tank last forever. I'm quite dissapointed tbh at the MPG I'm getting but still, who really cares, (Probably ken "emission Nazi" livingstone, btw he isn't worthy of capital letters let alone a capital city), I fill her once a week at most and get between 350-400 mpt with mainly urban driving.

My word, you guys really need to try a VW group diesel. Having had 110bhp, and 115 and 130bhp VW PD diesels in the past I never ever got below 53 mpg on the daily commute. In fact my dad regularly gets 60-63 mpg from a 130 TDi Bora in a mixture of driving including back road blasts. Imo all this hybrid stuff is overhyped.

Can't wait for the first diesel hybrid later this year, very interesting concept. Remember, re-couping energy lost in braking just makes sense, the biggest struggle is for the hybrid to lose the Grandad image! |

Get in with the trucks, there is a very good reason they drive at 58 mph and I don't think its based on safety. The physics behind it boil down to a sweet spot for an efficient speed. A combination of air resistance and engine speeds at around 55 ish make it the ideal speed. Plus joining the "air tunnel" of a convoy means you effectively get dragged along by the trucks. Its a practice they've always used. I find 75-80mpg is possible for a good 10 mile stretch when in "convoy". And before people start whinging about not getting anywhere quickly, I drive the M62/M6/M56 every single day in both directions and since trying to find the optimum speed I've settled on 57-58 mph and I still get to work at the same time. In fact part of the fun is seeing the confusion on the faces of the muppets doing 80 when I end up next to them at the lights at the end of my journey. Now I just need a pipe and slippers |

I would be scared between the lorries, as they tailgate for the economy (especially European ones so they can get back to Calais without having to fiil up), they must sit right on your rear bumper to get as close to the lorry in front as possible.
I hate the thought of them using the back of my car as part of their braking system |

Sorry for spamming but the last thing I've found is that if your calf muscles can cope, your foot is capable of being much more efficient than cruise with practice.
