Hybrid Future

I think this post should be here, or the general, but anyway...

I have two queries about hybrids that I thought I would share and see peoples opinions on them. And whether or not they would help with sales or popularity in the future for the hybrids.

1) The hybrid market is nowhere near as big here as america, but is there any other reason for them not to release a hybrid on the 3/5dr shape? Are there differences with the cars layout etc or is it purely that the hybrid is designed soley for a different audience and the UK market is not considered big enough?
One of the reasons I got my car was the look of it, not that the hybrid is bad, (much better than a majority of cars) but it didn't have the same impact for me inside and outside.

2) Is there any reason why hybrids aren't er... cross-breeded with diesels? Surely the mixture of fuel economy and/or performance would be greater. I guess diesels are heavier engines and mixing that with batterys etc would make a big car, but that is the only real reason I can think of. Oh and the american audience having more of a thirst for petrol, and again diesel being popular in (for the most part) european countries not america and japan where these cars were designed to be sold.

These were just a couple of thoughts that had crossed my mind while at work, and I think if they were incorporated into this civic (specially the styling) I would have probably chosen one of these instead of my diesel (which I love!). Anyone have any views on this?

Pegeuot have a 307 concept with a diesel electric hybrid and I believe the new 308 will have a diesel hybrid option.

The Honda dealer that I asked about the Hybrid, said that Honda was just testing the water. They made the Hybrid on a 4 door Jap/US style body, not on a 3/5 door because they aimed at an older market (ie 50+ year olds). The Euro-Civic in 3/5 door is actually aimed at the 30-50 year old market. How true this is, I'm not sure!

Try to ask the age of hybrid owners in this forum to get the average.
In Portugal in a forum like this, we got in 30 users an avareg of 35 years old, not so much.

I think the hybrid concept means more than fuel economy, but also reduce CO2 and other toxic gases. With diesel you don´t get this goal, not yet.

well you see today's Diesel engine. Fast, Lean, Economical, but it's nothing without a turbo!
Tomorrow's highly efficient Fuel engine is nothing without an assist. So I believe, like Honda does, in the future of the Honda IMA hybrid system!

Peugeot? Isn't that a car-brand who built unreliable car's with many electronic problems?

High Tech is only stuff for the Japanese.

I'm glad people are looking at this. It has been a while since I wrote on these forums. But yes, P@tje I agree with your comment, it is all marketing. And if I was to comment futher on this, I may, but only maybe, say that all hybrids so far, are a marketing exercise. But that would be very political of me......

I guess there is one straightforward explanation: it is usually cheaper to build a petrol engine, and the petrol is usually smaller (leaving space for the "hybrid" stuff) as well as lighter. Less obvious: a petrol engine is prone to revving higher, which may be favourable for charging the batteries.
Another factor may be that the car manufacturers don't want to give the customer too much too soon, imagine we would get used to cars burning 3l diesel /100 km - to whom would they then sell their current petrol guzzlers? I know this is a bit of a "conspiracy theory" but this one is quite plausible I guess
