Honda Civic Gearbox

Hi everyone
I have a honda civic 1.4i max 2002 which has done 21000 miles. Recently I found out that the gearbox for the car has been failed and told by the honda dealer that it will cost me around £1000. Did anyone else has this problem with this car as I have contacted Honda Uk and told by them that they have not received any complaint by anyone regarding failing of a gearboxs. I was also reding the user reviews on What Car and auto expres magazine and there are som other people who also had same problem with the car. Please help if you can.
