The Civic Story

Hi All,

My all, I just purchased my new honda civic 1.8 se 6 days ago and love it to bits.
I was enjoying the car for the last 6 days, when this evening when I got home from work, I parked my car as usual on the drive that slopes to the side. I applied the handbrake as per usual for the last 5 days.
This evening I did the same, but the handbrake failed!
My car rolled down the slope and hit the partion wall.
I am now left with a dented right pumper / right front body panel / plastic trim and broken front drive side light enclosure.
I'm really mad about it, why did the handbrake work for the last 5 days stop working? for a brand new car.... I would have thought they amended all the necessary handbrake issues for the new car I purchased 6 days ago!!!

Luckily I have the 7 days honda driveaway cover. This accident took place within this period. I have contacted the honda insurance (zurich insurance) within 10 mins of the incident. They will call me back tomorrow to process the the claim form. If anyone have any experience dealing with them please post something, as I am unsure how competent they are...

I am sorry to hear about your misfortune on a car so new. I am insured with Zurich and have found them to be very good. I am sure they will have your car shipshape in no time at all.

When you say the handbrake failed, do you mean the lever came off the ratchet,or the lever was still engaged and the car rolled away?
It has been known for disc type handbrakes to be prone to losing grip if the discs are very hot after a long journey, or when the brakes have been used heavily. This is due to the metal contracting on cooling. I always leave my car in gear as well as applying the handbrake.

Good luck with the repair

level engaged but the car rolled. After seeing the car against the wall. I reversed the car back to the correct position - pulled the handbrake again.... and yes entered 1st gear

So sorry to hear your news.

Welcome to civinfo anyway and I hope you get everything sorted soon.

Thankfully I have now got into the habit of putting my car into gear!

I would think that if the car is only 6 days old at the date of post then this car SHOULD have the new handbrake applied - its only ones built before December 2007 that need this recall but it would seem that this car is new, has the new handbrake and it still failed!

I would be rather worried as it seems that Honda have not fixed the issue at all then.

How did it go with the Claim? The excess with the Honda 7 days cover is rather steep isn't it? I would be making a complaint to Honda to get that cash back too, if it is a brand new car as this is the issue they have supposedly sorted!

I was told £300 excess when I took out the cover. Sorry to hear of your misfortune, and hope you get it sorted soon.

Always leave your car in gear, as this can happen to any car in reality, especially parked on a hill.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck, but, as said above, if your car is an 08 build then the handbrake should have been fixed. I would go back to your dealer and have a word with them as it should not have happened.

I put mine in gear everytime I park, without fail. Been doing it for years so it's a habit.

P.S. Welcome by the way! Hope you get to enjoy your civic and the grin factor!

I guess it's theoretically possible that the car was built earlier (Pre December 2007) but had been in storage up till now. I'm not sure how much stock Honda builds up but its very common with other manufacturers. For example, Vauxhall has a large storage area around the corner from the Rockingham Circuit near Corby.

Sorry to hear about (and see) your damaged car though linxeffect, I hope you get it back to 100% soon.

MY08 models were built from late October 2007 so it would have had to have been an early October 2007 or before to be a MY07. Plus the waiting lists that have been going on doesn't make me think there is a big stock out there.

I don't know of anyone who has an 08 reg which was a MY07 build unless its the 1.4 SE+ (and I don't know of anyone with that car)
