Yorkshire puddings all round

Picked up my 2.2 Diesel Civic ES in Nighthawk Black 2 days ago on Friday -- took it for a blast around the Yorkshire Dales and am thrilled with it so far. Just thought I'd introduce myself and slip in a quick question in the process:

Does anyone have any recommendations for good value insurance brokers? I searched this forum and couldn't find any big discussions on it so far. At the moment I'm on Honda's free 7 day insurance (they quoted £3900 for the year!). The cheapest quote I've had so far is about £1400 fully comp. for me and one other named driver from Endsleigh. (I'm 24 and this is my first car, so sadly I don't have the joy of a no claims bonus.) I expect to pay a bit more because of my age, but would like to get the £1400 down a bit if possible! All suggestions welcome...

Hi mate, welcome to the forum, Whereabout's in West Yorkshire are you?

I found my best quote using moneysupermarket. The best deal for me was with Esure

Welcome to the club from a fellow West Riding Tyke.

I can't think of many better places to go for a spin than the Dales, especially on a mild Autumn weekend.

I'd check out moneysupermarket for a quote too. I went with Barclays this year as they promised to beat my renewal quote by £1 then send me a cheque for £50, though I'm still waiting for it more than 3 weeks on.

Hi folks. Thanks for the welcome and the feedback. Just been to the site you both recommended and found someone who's beaten my old quote by over 200 quid. Much appreciated

n_earnshaw -- I'm about 15 minutes North West of Bradford, near to Shipley. Are you local too?

JB75 -- yup, the Dales are great, if a little hairy at times. I'm still getting used to the width of the beast, so find myself breathing in and praying when I see something coming the other way along the narrower roads! Good fun though. You don't happen to drive through Shipley every day about commuting time do you? There's a silver '06 Civic I see almost every day that does, and it's probably the reason I ended up going into the Honda showroom myself!

Welcome from a North Yorkshire pud! You'll soon get used to the width of the Civic, it was the lack of a sizeable bonnet I had trouble with! Had real trouble parking at first.

Might be worth checking out Bell Direct - they're part of the Admiral Group and based in Cardiff. Really quick at sending out paperwork etc. Can't fault them.

Thanks to Ally and Jobo for the new suggestions. Good to see I'm not the only Yorkshire Civic owner on here, too.

I've just had a quote from both Admiral and Bell; oddly Admiral worked out a little cheaper at £1064, or £916 with a £150 voluntary excess. That's starting to look a bit more reasonable...

Ally -- I saw a Type-S in the showroom last week when I bought my 2.2ES and it looked lovely. Enjoy it!

I'm in Keighley. You weren't on the Stanningley bypass earlier today (about lunchtime) were you by any chance? I saw another NHB turning off towards Bradford.

NHB's - they're as common as muck! Saw four of them on my way to Leeds on Tuesday!

No, I still shout out and to myself!! is it the vivid blue or blueish silver you're waiting to see? If it's the latter, it can be arranged!

Must admit I need to wash mine as it's been a week and a half and it's looking more like an NHB that's returned from a rally. (Think it looks good even with the dirt though)

I'm from north Wakefield, you're most likely to see me scything up and down the M1 around Leeds.

You'll get used to the width or the car soon enough, at first I found its size unusual: it's a deceptively large car. I found the short bonnet a bit odd at first too.

Good luck with getting the insurance sorted; I'm 31 with 8 years no claims and thought some of the quotes I got for my Civic were crackers.

The Vivid Blue I'm afraid. Someone at work said they'd seen one and I wanted to go out and find it, but I'll wait for them to come to me instead. I've also found out that I'm no longer the only civic in the works car park

I do however still win the competition in the department for "Best Car Award" even beating 2 Focus ST's

If you live in Leeds it seems compulsory to own a Nighthawk Black or Alabaster Silver one, they're about the only colours I see out and about. They're our regional colours though, representing coal and fog

Through my return trips to the dealer I think I've chalked off the full set of colours now. Still love my silver but do like the red now I've seen one in the paint. How rare are those blues though.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome and suggestions. (I'll let the "civilised" comment slide past, elfa, but can appreciate the pun!) I went with Admiral in the end; they came out cheapest, and do a 10 month contract thing that means I'll get a no claims bonus quicker. I'll be 25 by then too, for all the good it'll do me...

I seemed to have inadvertently lit the torch on a small-scale colour debate. I struggled between NHB and the crazy-bright red, which I'd seen on a sport model with 18" alloys. In the end I felt the red only looked good because of the alloys, so plumped for the black. I'd been told to avoid 18" monsters because it affects the ride quality. (For the benefit of the southern folk -- we don't have proper roads in these 'ere parts, only cobbles and mud tracks. ) As well as that, I didn't want a pink car in 5 years time....

I also went with the mudflaps, carpet mats, reverse parking sensors, locking alloy wheel nuts and Diamondbrite metal and fabric coating, most of which were thrown in by the dealer. I quite fancy the aluminium door steps, footwell lights and a good sound system upgrade next (bass kit?), and am also considering chipping the beast, but it's speedy enough for now.

Only had the one trip so far, so any nighthawks you've seen probably weren't mine. Do you lot flash each other (so to speak) when passing then?

Don't get Bassworks, it's rubbish. The footwell lights are very expensive, so consider doing the festoon LED mod in the how to section.
