Potential New Civic Owner

Hello,

I'm just in the process of shopping around to replace my Rover 45TD (no sniggering at the back there!) and the Civic has caught my eye. I'm considering the SE spec, but unsure of whether or not to go for the 1.8 or 2.2 diesel. The next step will be a test drive to decide between the two. So I will be doing lots of reading and trying to get as much info as possible to see if the Civic is a good way to go.

One thing that does concern me is reports of problems with the first models. Which have found that it hasn't reached the usual high standards we have come to expect from Honda, so any comments will be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Bob

Hi Bob, all the info you require is in the forum; yes a few problems were found with the early cars (mine is an 06 model) and various jobs have been done under waranty, but with a brand new car you expect this. The 07 models seem to have been sorted now.
Now the matter of the 1.8 or the 2.2 am sure you will read lots about this also on here and in the end its down to you after the test drives, we all have our own slant on this topic
Good luck and don't forget to post your findings

Thanks for the response Oke. I was wondering if most of the issues were relating to the car being a new model. I would prefer to buy a new car, but a salesman tried very hard to sell me a year old 1.8EX, telling me it would be a better buy than a new 1.8SE. I managed to resist his patter and come home to do the usual research on the internet.

Hi Bob i personaly would go for the 1.8 petrol with its good economy , unless your doing 18000+ a year and keep the car for three years you will not regain the price difference between the 1.8 and the diesel.

Funny that, I went looking for a demonstrator and the salesman wanted to sell me a new SE that was in my prefered colour

The point about the cost differential is very valid between the petrol and diesel, but the driveablity is also important. I have got very used to a turbo diesel engine and like the torque characteristics. I guess a test drive will reveal all

You will find a huge great debate on this Bob. I think there are probably several. Here is one for example.

Personally we went for the diesel because of the torque. On a motorway you need never change down out of 6th. It is great!!!

I managed to get a brief 15 minute test drive in the diesel last week. Good first impressions, but I need longer than that to get a proper feel. The dealer (Brayley St Albans) has said I can have the car for a day if I sort out my own insurance. So that will be the plan

Got my 2.2 SE last month and never looked back. Its superb, no problems (touch wood) and i can highly recommend it. Motorway driving couldn't be easier. Shove in 6th and just leave it.

Hi Bob, My 1.8 i-Shift was purchased in July 2006 and has been fault free. Brilliant engine; would not consider a diesel at all - unless, of course, I was driving a tractor or lorry.

Ps: I have an average of 43mpg

Hi Bob

Get that test drive sorted! I've owned the i-VTEC version (20,000 miles) and have recently purchased the 2.2 diesel and although my annual mileage (22k) had a bearing on buying the i-CTDi, the difference in sheer driving pleasure is considerable.

There's bags of torque available from that diesel engine and it's going to be a pleasure doing one of my jaunts to the wilds of the Highlands in October - not that the iVTEC wasn't so, it's just all so effortless in the 2.2!

I take that back......they do pull very well.....but why don't they make an 'i-Shift' version for us 'auto' boys. Surely they could adapt the system to handle all that torque?
