Hi Matt, and welcome aboard

we have a few members in here who have owned various models of the Civic, so hopefully someone might know what they're doing

My own experience of carbs was back on a twin webber 1.3 Fiesta Sport - but that was a good few years back!

Hi Matt welcome to the forum - ok twin carbs this is easy and as your a mechanic even easier.

1. Make sure that all of the air hoses / fuel hoses are in good shape

2. Look at the mechnical linkages that activate both carbs. They need to move in sync and open the butterflys at exactly the same time. Take your time doing this as this will make the whole job a lot easier.

3. Start the engine and let it get to normal operating temp as now we are going to set the mixture of each carb. The easiest way to do this at home is to use a tool called a colour tune. It simply replaces one of the spark plugs and as the engine runs you can actually see the colour of the ignited fuel in the cylinder. You simply adjust the air/fuel screw on the carb until the desired colour is acheived. Set each carb individually as one carb will feed cylinders 1 and 2 and the other carb cylinders 3 and 4. If you do have access to a workshop, complete this stage using a 4 gas analyser.

4. Next the carbs need to be balanced - this means that the air flow travelling down each venturi is equal at idle. This is where your earlier work of setting up the mechanisims pays off . You need a simple airflow meter which is held in the venturi airflow. Measure both of the carbs and alter the idle screw on both until the required idle speed is acheived with equal airflow through both carbs. This air flow measurement can also be measured using a vacuum gauge but beleive me its a lot harder!!

5. Re-check the mixture and adjust if necessary and that's it

Good luck and if you need any more help just ask

Hi Matt

Amazing a Civic for less than what Honda asks for a set of car mats new ! Running bargain cars is great fun and you learn a lot keeping them running. A profesional Mechanic will be very useful to the site.
