I am a serial car changer.... Must stop now!
1975 Renault 5 TS- 1300 cc and fast 0-60 in 12 secs which for those days was a rocket. 15mph per 100rpm in 4th though! 1978 Datsun Something-Awful-or-other 1980 Opel Kadett Agricultural German version of the Vauxhall Shove-it 1979 Golf GLS Mk1 Great Car 1500cc of rapidity! 1983 Golf GL Newer Version of the last! 1986 Volvo 340 (Awful) 1986 Fiat Uno (Nippy but badly built) Relatively stylish for its day 1987 VW Polo Smooth but slow 1986 VW Golf GL Mk2 Lovely car but soggier and more luxurious than Mark1 1984 VW Scirocco Auto (Great) Looked stylish and relatively rapid 90 bhp 1800 1987 Golf GTi Overrated 1990 Golf Driver Lovely pale blue Mk2 1991 Audi 80 1800 Auto. Nice luxurious big car feel but leggy on the miles 1995 VW Polo My first new car. OK but only just. Won all the comparative tests at the time. 1994 VW Golf Mk 3. Soggy but comfy and well equipped. 1996 VW Polo 1.4cl. OK 1998 VW Golf Mk4. Well built luxurious. First diesel! 90bhp and 60mpg around scotland 2000 VW Golf 4 GTTDi. PD engine. Unrefined six speed. 1994 Mercedes 320CE. What a car! Expensive to run and fuel. 2001 Smart Passion. A lot of fun. Second car. 2001 BMW Compact. Horrible styling, well built but boring. 2001 Skoda Fabia TDi. Fastish and economical. 2002 Skoda Octavia TDI. Well built non PD engine. Got seduced by the MINI. 2003 Mini Cooper. Fun but always having something repaired under warranty 1998 Mercedes SLK. Great car, but impractical. 2001 mercedes S320CDi. Unreliable but comfy (and cheapish) 2001 Mercedes SL Splodgy, like a jelly with the roof down. 2006 Hyundai Coupe 2.7 V6 Auto (Best car of the lot, believe it or not) STOLEN. Really impressed with this. Great build only let down by the quality of the finish in some places. Replaced by Civic ES CTDi. So far impressed but have only done short journeys til now. Will be intersting to see how tired I feel when I get out of this after a London to Edinburgh overnight jaunt at Christmas. Best car for not feeling tired so far was the Hyundai Coupe. Not sure if the Civic's seats are supportive enough to cope in the same way. Last edited by dougl65; 28th November 2007 at 15:17. |

The civic is my first car but i will share the list of cars i have driven so far and my opinion on them.
1. The car i learned to drive in was a ford fiesta 1.2 with 67 BHP. At the time that was all i needed but after driving in other cars you start to dislike it. Acceleration in first gear was ok, then it sucked. Not to mention the cornering 2. 2002 VW passat TDI with 136 BHP. Great car, the ride comfort and interior(especially the available space) were incredible. The engine was brutal and fast 3. 2004 Audi A4 with also 136 BHP. Also a very good car but we had some problems on ours. Engine is less brutal then the passat but pretty much the same. Cornering is a lot better though. Like the car very much. 4. VW Golf TDI 4motion with 150 BHP. I have been told this is a pretty rare car (only 10 in belgium, according to the dealer 5. My milano red 1.8 Type-S. Fell in love with it and still happy together grtz |

Yes got to admit i'm impressed with the Civic, we still can't get over how much room there is in it, probably change the Pug for a 2.2 before long, shame they don't do it as an auto. |

1.) Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 16v Breeze [Silver] - Hmmmmm, nice little car but I got bored of it after a while (plus it wasn't safe, sounded like it was made from coke cans).
2.) BMW E36 318i [Metallic Black] - Beautiful car, fast, handled great, and very comfortable (and pretty, partially Schnitzer-styled). 3.) BMW E39 520i (late 2000 pre facelift post engine change, not 2.0 but 2.2) [Metaalic silver/blue] - Lovely Car, comfortable, smart, fast-ish (once it got going), but people gave me too much grief in it (20 year old + 5 series = Jealousy! 4.) Honda Civc - Nuff said Oh and a; 5.) Ford Escort Van, 1.8d (NO turbo), [Red] - Bl**dy greta thing to drive, I love it. (I still drive it....) Not bad for just under 4 years driving..... Tom |

Starting from when Pontius was still a pilot....another old fart writes......
67 Honda CD 175cc - Decent bike, did 11,000 miles in 1st year ?? Zundaap Bella scooter 250cc? - Temporary aberration 61? Royal Enfield Constellation - bored out to 750cc, wish I'd kept it 63 Austin Mini 850 - great wee learner car - gearbox failure killed it 63 Ford Cortina Mk1 1500 - heap of cr*p scrapped in 1970 when floor fell out (that's right - only 7 years old) 65 Ford Zephyr 4 - relaxed cruising passion-wagon with bench front seat & column change (ask your dads) 68 MGB Roadster - pretty nice, but had to hit the fuel pump with a spanner from time to time. Stolen after trade-in and found sunk in a Highland loch. 68 Rover 2000 - another relaxed cruiser. Had fun working out the tappet shim sizes. 75 Fiat 127 - felt faster than it was. Killed the engine when flat-out for 30 miles to see my son being born. 78 Opel Kadett - 1st New car, new family needs new car, kept it 11 years. ?? Honda CB 250cc - transport to station and to work in good weather, 80 Rover SD1 3500 - badly-built big rumbler that succumbed to a terminal crankshaft oil leak. 79 Volvo 343 auto - worst car I've ever had. 1.4l Renault engine and rubber belt drive. Yuck! 91 Citroen BX 1600 - quite cool, although demonstrated "galleon in full sail" tendencies when cornering. 98 Ford Focus 1800 - decent spec, decent price and did > 100,000 with little trouble. 07 Honda Civic 2.2 - simply wonderful engine! |

F reg Morris 1100....dark blue with yellow bonnet and big whip aerial.
Ford Cortina Mk2, 1300.....easy to make the back wheels lock when braking if no-one in the back. Ford Escort Mk1 1100. Ford Escort Mk2 1300.....ex police car so had added extras like anti-roll bars and bigger battery, and zip in the roof lining! Hilman Avenger. Broke a head bolt while refitting the cylinder head. Fiat 132 2000 auto. Lovely car with all the gadgets of the time. Fiat Strada auto. Almost my worst ever car. Pergeot 405 (My choice of company car). Good car but poor engine...only time I've ever called the RAC. RAC call centre: "You're at Stonehenge. Where exactly?" Me: "In the car park near a big pile of rocks, it has been here a while". Volvo 440(I think) (Temporary company car). Worst car. Gutless and grey with not much room inside. Vauxhall Cavalier 2L Mk2 (I think) (Temporary company car). Liked it so much I bought it. N reg Ford Mondeo 1.8L Mk1. Good car. W reg Ford Mondeo 2L Mk2. Another good car. 52 reg Honda Civic Type S. Good for beating Golf GTi's, 33MPG not good compared to Mondeo, even with carefull driving. 4 alloys replaced, assorted rusty bits repaired under warranty. 56 reg Honda Civic 2.2 ES. Great car, if only it was assembled without all the squeeks and creaks. Terry |

Well here goes mine. I have not included any of my motorbikes (guessing must be around 15 - 20 as been riding since '81) or any of my vans which I use for work.
My present bikes are Buell Firebolt XB12R and Yamaha R1. My present van is Renault Master So here are the cars: 1968 Escort Mk1 1300 – Given to me as the core plug had popped out. Full of rust and a Police magnet 1975? Austin Allegro – And yes they did have a square steering wheel! Didn’t like right handers much, stuffed it into a wall 1973 Hillman Hunter Estate – Big end went after running low on oil 1971 Escort Mk1 Mexico – Brilliant car but kept going through gearboxes and clutches (I was still only 18-19 at the time) 1982 Honda Civic 1300 – Was my first newish car, only 3 years old. Great car until lost 1st, 3rd and 5th gears. 1984 Escort Mk3 XR3 – Paid top money for this, but part ex'd the above for it. Was out of there like a scalded cat! 1987 Austin Montego 1300 - We had 2 children by this time and decided I needed something easier to get them in & out. Hated it. Lasted a couple of months 1986 Peugeot 205 GtI 1.6 – Superb car. Thought I was Nigel Mansell in that, until lost it big time and written it off (Another wall situation) TPTF insurance, so was paying for that for next three years. Sad time of my life! 1983 Fiesta 1300 Ghia – the rusty coloured one, which hid most of rust quite well 1986 Honda Prelude 1.8EX – Bought this car in 1990, kept it 1 year and sold it to my father-in-law who kept it till 2005! It was a GREAT car. 1988 Peugeot 309 GTI – Was OK, but not up to 205 standards 1987 Granada 2.9 Ghia – Decided we would have a go at caravanning, and needed a big heavy car. Holidayed once and my wife hated it. So sold the car and caravan. Lost a small fortune. 1989 Escort Mk4 XR3i – Had only done around 10k and due to insurance costs paid £2000 for it. Later became wife’s car 1993 Rover 220 Gti – Wasn’t a bad car at all 1994 Nissan Primera 2.0 Diesel – Never out of the garage (head gasket, cam belt snapped, gearbox) Was nice to drive though when it was on the road 1997 Rover 214i – My 1st NEW car (All have been since). Paid £12,500 in 1997, for wind up windows, no central locking, 2 speaker stereo. Just before Rover went bump around 2005, they were selling the MG version for around £8k! 1998 Rover 416 Si – Our daughter was born and we couldn’t get a buggy in the 214 so needed a bigger car. 2000 BMW 316iSE – Very nice car, not a single problem 2003 BMW 318iSE – Very vice car, not a single problem (and did 80k miles in that) 2007 Honda Civic 1.8EX – A bargain at the price of £16k. When you look at what the Rover was 10 years previously, it shows how cheap cars are at present. And for the first time in my entire driving life, I am debt free. Only covered 800 miles up to now, so time will tell with this one. |
