WMA Discs

Still only just getting to grips with the new car (but half a day old still). Found myself popping out to it to try new stuff at a late hour, as I saw many others have done!

Anyway, as far as the audio player goes I'm really impressed. The GUI on the EX is very easily picked up, especially to anyone vaguely PC literate, in fact I had to force myself to register that it was so simple!

I'd noticed that some had said there was a very long wait for data discs to be recognised but I've been mildly surprised. My discs are Verbatim Lightscribe CDs and I've used Windows Media Player 11 to burn WMA format (better than MP3 and I only use my ipod for podcasts anyway) disks. Seems to take about 5 secs for the disk to be recognised and start playing with correct track info, the full disk info then populates in the background. May be a firmware update in the 2007 model or could be that the system prefers WMA or even reads the windows playlist.

fishy - how many tracks are you putting on the CD?

dodgy memory recalls that the problems (slow to load) happen if more than about 100?

That would explain my problems. I usually listen to audiobooks, which often have 200-300 tracks on an MP3 or WMA CD. It takes forever to start playing again after a traffic announcement.

Hmm. the CDs I've tried certainly have 100+ tracks but I doubt they break 200. Using 192Kbps in the main though some of the older stuff is 128Kbps so may have a CD with 200+

I use MP3 cds and I never have a problem with them starting to play, its the long time between inserting a CD and getting to know what all the track info is which is a problem

Same here ... it plays pretty quickly but takes a long time to list the disk information so that it can be navigated. It is definitely related to the number of tracks as when I was first trying it out with less tracks it worked much quicker.

I have used cars with full iPod integration and it can take over a minute to read the iPod (go on try sitting for a minute!). So is obviously to do with reading the data.

You can't really compare laptop with CD/MP3 drive in car.
Also, thing I'm not sure of (as I'm still waiting for my car) - does the play er read ID3 tags?
If that is the case, that can be reason for such slowness - as CD drive needs to access each MP3, read tag, move lens, etc, etc...
Another thing to remember, that CD drives for car spin CD's at much slower speed than one in your computer - due to vibrations in car, etc.. also whole drive must be more robust (and is usually slower due to this).

I think it does use ID3 tags, there has been several discussions on here about editing ID3 tags. It seems the MP3 player plays the tracks in numerical and then alphabetical order based on the ID3 tag information, so if you have lots of tracks with the same number if you make a compilation it does not play it in the order that you burnt it, again probably a reason for it to take so long.

This might work if it's starting to play up after a year; but not going to make any difference on a new car, you can usually hear when it's trying to reread a sector, it just takes a while to read all of the data.

I'm convinced the bitrate you encode them at makes a big difference to the read speed as well - my 2nd mp3 disc I've just done I didn't really have enough albums to fill it up so I actually included some 320kbps mp3's on the disc rather than reduce their quality - although this disc has LESS files/tracks on it takes a LOT longer to read those larger files...

WMA disc

You can put 255 tracks on a CD
I use variable bit rate (about 64KBPS) ripping with Windows Media player.
Perfect quality!
If you have the SATNAV system, the selection of tracks and folders works like a charm. All y all an amazing audio system.

In my previous car I installed a 3000Euro Pioneer SATNAV system
It only played MP3 and there was no way to list the tracks or select a song. you had to do with next and previous track to make a selection!
It had a 7" screen and showed only 1 title track at the time!
It was a 2003 system, with 1970 software!

I was using WMA disks as I believed they might be better but I have noticed a strange thing now I have tried an MP3 disk. With the WMA disk the track titles were cut off at about 16 characters .... very annoying. The MP3 disk I have just done shows the whole text right across the screen if it is a long title. I'm well chuffed as I could never work out why they were cut off.

It might be taking longer to read the CD tracks as it is trying to read the CD tag info AND play the music at the same time. That will be causing the read head to be flitting back and forwards, making it slower. Try inserting a CD and switching to the radio for a few seconds, then see if it has read the CD.

pjelworth,
Please tell more about your mp3 disc format/layout. After maybe three attempts, all mine truncate most titles, but not all, to 16 characters.
Regards, pcr.

I ripped CDs using Windows Media Player 11 into "My Music" folder on the PC. Went into the folder and right-clicked the folder (with is the name of the artist) and then selected "Send to" and selcted my CD drive.

Maybe Media Player 11 creates the more compatible ID tags

when text is longer then display press the disp key to read next part of the text.
although this is not handy it's a solution.

it's very important to have a flat tree in the structure. It's the best way to use foldernames but without any subfolders !
Don't use foldernames with name of Artist and in these folder the name of the disc. That's not the way.
Best is that the root of the cd only contain foldernames of one level. If you create a folder, name it like the name of the album. The name of the artist is in the TAG of de files and can always be displayed.

This solution is also advised for DVD players to play MP3/WMA with those players.
