I wonder if these kits will become obsolete as flash memory gets cheaper? After all a simple USB or memory card slot would be easier to integrate, the manufacturer wouldn't have to worry about a specific MP3 player.

I have just received a Sandisk 1.0gb drive £15.00 delivered - that would be good for over 300 songs.

Mike
Its funny you should mention this!

Other manufacturers are already incorporating this! For example, the new Audi that I've ordered has two flash memory slots behind the swing-face of the sat-nav plus system. In fact all of Audi's sat-nav plus systems have this feature now!! Its pretty cool!

As an added extra, you can also have a USB connection fitted in the glove box with Audi!

Almost 100% sure this means aux input located in the glovebox!!

The technology to integrate full ipod integration with the OEM headunits is only just being developed. There are in fact very few (if any) OEM systems out there that will offer full control over your ipod (i.e. playlists, albums etc.). The problem is that the software of the HU will have to be fully updated. This will mean that Retro fitting may not be an easy option and in fact might not even be possible!!

Good news is that most manufacturers are addressing the problem and we will probably see cars offering full ipod integration in the future! But for the mean time, we'll have to deal with just aux inputs which are easily retro fitted.

When Honda release theirs, I would suggest just buying the parts and either fit it yourself or pay someone else to do it. Honda will charge a fortune!!

If you want to see what the future could be like for ipod integration then read this article. I know its about Audi again but for obvious reasons I know more about their systems! The point is, this could be the kind of system adopted by all other car manufacturers.

i got the new Honda Type S brochure today and it shows a photo of the ipod link. Its a lead which comes out of the cubby hole above the gearstick.

It looks from the photo as if its gonna be ipod only which will annoy some people. They even call it the ipod link.

Had a chat with a dealer today and he had seen said brochure and would hazard a guess that it would be a dealer fit option as most civic bits are... here's hoping.

Cheers

I suppose the good news is that this does suggest steering wheel track control and ipod charging. Lets hope for the best! (in hushed tones...)...maybe we will get track names on the display as well. I would be happy with just track skip and charging mind .

Cheers

I would think almost a certainty now but dont wanna get my hopes up to soon. But there is no reason at all why it shouldnt.

What i like is the idea of having the ipod tucked away in the cubby hole out of site. But still being able to control it.

It is really ridiculous to make it fit only one kind of MP3 player. There are loads of alternatives to i-Pods, I have a Sony HD walkman, I know people who have their music on jukeboxes like Archos. It just doesn't make sense, 3.5mm aux input will work for any device that has a headphone socket!

They should bring out a choice of leads so you could have either just a 3.5 jack lead coming out but you wouldnt have steering wheel controls etc or the ipod connection which they are bringing which were assuming will allow total control via wheel controls/screen etc.

I know ipod has the biggest share but theres still loads of others out there with different makes.

I'm gonna stick my neck out and suggest that Honda will charge between £100 and £150 for this option; a silly amount!!

I have to be honest and think we will be looking at £250 to £300 fitted . £100 to £150 just seems a little to fair for honda to charge us

Cheers

Just thought I'd post this because I don't think anyone else has!!

Right, so we've established that the HU in the Civic is made by panasonic. Well i've seen a lot of people looking for ipod adapters for Honda, but what about looking for ipod adapters for panasonic?!!

Well I took it upon myself to find one and here's one being sold for £40.

Now if i'm not mistaken, that looks like it will fit in the back of the HU. I've attached a picture of the back of the HU (courtesy of Roger Harris ) and highlighted the particular area in red.

Now, is this completely wrong??

Be aware though that the HU is actually branded/made by Matsushita (yes, I know very well this is a part of Panasonic).. saying that, though, it does look very much like it's the right connector.

How would this work tho? Any ideas?

Yeah, that second picture is a lot clearer. However, there IS another box out there which looks to connect into where the white connector is (presuming that's the cd changer)..

I just want a connector. Aux in would be fine for me....I have an iPod so of course I would also be happy with an iPod specific connector as well.

The price should not be too stupid or they will lose sales to people like Halfords who will have a dension icelink for the 2006 Civic soon and will charge £150 for full control and charging.

I would pay £100 for an aux though tops. I just want all my music in my car without having to fanny around changing cd's.
