Speakers audiophile needed!

ok
when it comes to ripping panels out, unscrewing bulbs, and hacking into 12V circuits, I'm basically happy

But when it comes to speakers and HUs and amps and sub-woofer this, cross over that, I'm so far out of my depth I can't even see the surface


So - a dead basic question please

Can I simply replace current 2ohm speakers with some (better) 4ohm ones?

Specifically, the rear bassworks with infinity 6510s

bearing in mind that there is an existing amp in there (somewhere!)

Unfortunately the main bit of your question, I cannot answer!
But....the crossover "splits" the tweeter and the main speaker; and comes with the infinity pack. However since you're replacing the rears; you won't need to use the tweeters; it may be a good idea to install the crossover anyway (included in the pack)
You will also need the speaker rings; I see absolutly no problems with what you're doing, but somebody else may say differently due to the amp you have.

No messing with cross-overs (not really needed for the rear), but should give the same tonal qualities as the front speakers (assuming you are putting infiniti's up front) - Also have a tweeter "built in".

For 'real' bass (if needed), a compact subwoofer in the boot would fit the bill.

both are 4ohm jobbies tho - could I use them to replace the 2ohm basswork versions I've already got?
Or will driving them with the bassworks amp knacker them

Replacing 2ohm with 4ohm also basically cuts power they can produce in half (not volume tho - which also depends on sensitivity of speakers).
Also, those Infinities can only be used as 'bass' speakers, due to amp for bassworks and crossover in it.

All in all, for just bass, I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle (might be wrong..)

I'm with Nick - if the objective is to increase bass, then the only option is to scrap the idea of the whole bassworks/door speakers thing, and put a proper sub (even a tiny one) somewhere else in the car. The small speakers in a non-optimum leaky box (a door) will never work well, however hard you try.

(my fault, not yours!)

Does the basswork amp mean that only the bass signal is going to the rears then?

That might explain my problem as I 'have' to have the fader biased to the rear (14 yr old daughter wants a higher volume than us old foggies in the front)

Would really have to take a look at the 'bassworks' amp, but essentially I guess it is sending only lower frequency sound to the rear speakers. This means that the speakers, if chosen correctly, will give a lower bass response, without 'struggling' to play the higher frequencies as well.

From reading earlier posts, it seems that the extra amp had 'some' adjustment, but not sure what for - academic, as it is not easily accessible anyway. But, bear in mind that the numpty who fitted it probably just set any adjustments to a random position and left it. What would ideally happen is to play a cd with set frequencies on it and then tune the amp, for both gain and frequency cut-off(if possible). This is very personal to your ear, and also to the type of music you listen to.

If I had the system I would try and gain access to the bassworks amp, and move it somewhere that is easily accessibly - glovebox, under a passenger seat etc. You could then tinker with any adjustments to suit.

Just a thought really, but as POTTSY says, you will only really get true bass by 'shifting' air - something a set of speakers in a rear door are not really going to achieve.

Yes, I could say with 99% probability (even though I havent heard the bassworks yet) - that amp only send lower frequencies to bass speakers - as it has builtin crossover.
This is atleast how majotiry of those systems works.

For example, I use 50Hz crossover for my box in trunk.
