hello there
i used the 12v power socket in the boot for mine because this is only fed when the ignition is on. To connect it i just used a old 12v phone charger lead and connected the pos from this to the remote on my amp.
hope this helps.

not what i would do this can cause a surge to the amplifier and could also draw power from the socket, i would use a remote feed from the head unit or use a remote generator

Re: remote wire

Amp remotes only draw milliamps anyway and the 12v socket is capable of about 10amp. If your using the original HU then there is no remote out anyway. Plus removing the hu isn't a quick job. Another reason I used this is so I can take my sub out quickly if I need the boot space.

I used the wire that sits next to the antenna wire at the back of the HU. I think it's the supply to the antenna amp that is placed somewhere in the back.
Any way, there is 12v on it when the HU is on, and it is at ground level when not. Perfect for remote.

iv seen what can happen from remote wire surge the amplifire will go into protection and will remain usless if it gets a surge a remote is designed to come on grandualy after a head unit is on, you will hear a pop when you turn your car on and off if you surging the amplifier

i install custom sound systems for a living

off hand no i dont no the colour of it but it can b found using a test light or a multi meter

looking for a remote wire now i have had my head unit out but its not something i have looked for but every radio has 1 to find this u will need a testing light turn your car on with the radio on do not unplug it u will bring on the airbag warning light anyway connect the testing light onto an earth like the chassie of the car or the metal on the radio then start testin the wires u will find there will 3 wires that will make the testing light light up 4 if your head lights are on the 3 wires u have that light up 2 will go off when u turn the car off and 1 will stay lit that is your main power wire turn the car back on and look that the other 2 turn the raidio off usin the power button on the front of the radio and u will see 1 of the wire now goes dead that will b your remote

if you use a multimeter then do the same as discribed but the meter will read 12 volts

as for a remote generator its a company called connects 2 that make them you will get them from halfords or any good supplyer

part number for it is "igni-gen"

It is the wire/connector in the red circle in the attached picture. If I remember well it's a black wire. Click here for more details on the HU connections.
I wouldn't use any +12v, like the plug in the back. Your amp would be powered even the HU is not on. And you don't know what state it is in when not active. (Open, ground, HiZ,...)
You could however make your own remote by making a signal detection circuit on one of the speaker outputs. That's pretty advanced electronics though. If you're interested, there is an example here.

I just wired my subwoofer amp up yesterday using the rear power outlet wire as a remote turn on and it works fine no pops etc.

Could I not wire and inline fuse or something in the remote wire, or might the amp be ok if it has a protection mode?

Anything must be easier than removing HU and locating/trailing a new cable

Adding a fuse would be a good idea indeed in this config. And put a diode in series with the fuse, so that, in whatever odd case, your amp is protected against reversed current from the remote input.
As the amp only draws milli-amps from the remote pin, use the smallest fuse possible. (small in terms of rating.)
Mind you that your amp will always be on when your car is running, not only when the HU is on.
