My brother has a Vectra and it has DAB
I got a Dab radio for xmas when it first became available and it's tuned to FM cos the dab reception here is so limited and what channels we can get are full of static worse than FM - of course it might have changed now but I dont know cos I've never used it LOL

No switch over for FM is planned at all. They had talked about doing it roughly 4 years after the TV signals went off, which would make it (currently) 2016. I'm not sure they're ever going to switch it off TBH. It's one thing to switch to digital for TV, as the use of a set top box, while not ideal, is acceptable to most people. The same cannot be said for radio-only devices. It would render too many things with radio built-in as useless. My prediction is it's not going to happen for at least another 12 years.

French Dab standard has been approved this year for a deployment up to 2012 (T-DBM standard). A this moment all the french territory must be covered, analogic TV signal should be off and the main Radio should been transmitting in numeric (One of the most popular channel here named RTL must start the numerical broadcasting nest year). but there are no plan to eliminate FM broadcasting. Test are done at the moment in Paris.

We have already DAB radio broadcasting in Paris Lyon on A10 motorway and in some other areas in france but nothing like in the UK and in Germany.
By the way we are broadcasting on the L band in France and not on the III band like the rest of Europe... French cultural exeption syndrom maybe.

Hi - I don't have a Civic but am thinking about getting one. I love my Kenwood DAB unit in my current car though (reception is fine over the places I go most - Sheffield, Manchester, Leicester area) and I'm not sure I could go back to radio 5 on medium wave, or face the loss of 6Music and The Arrow.

I would like a seamless way to fit this, and notice from other posts that the head units are made by panasonic (I think) who own JVC (I think)! So I was wondering if the stereo that comes in the car would work with the JVC KTDB1000 DAB tuner (or something similar) that plugs into the back of the stereo and is completely hidden.

Does anyone know - the Civic seems to tick all the boxes for me expect for Radio 5 being analogue!

Just out of curiosity, from memory, aren't they considering changing DAB to something called DAB2 or DAB+ ?

If so, will current units be compatible?

I might work if the connection is made through the aerial, I've had a look on the kenwood site and they have a system wich is working like that with info given through the rds system

I'm happy enough to wait for in-car DAB until they get the quality sorted & decide what the hell is going on regarding backwards compatability in the next few years.
Kremmen, this was the link that apemonkeyman posted a bit earlier on in this thread, it makes interesting reading.

I have DAB now, and am more than happy with the quality - I use it in preference to FM even for stations I can get on FM. Needless to say the quality of Radio 5 and Virgin is way better on DAB than it is on AM, and there is a much, much wider choice of stations. My Blaupunkt Woodstock head unit was worth the money just for 6 Music.

I haven't even got a proper aerial for DAB - my current car (Alfa 156) has the FM aerial in the back window like the Civic, and I was loathed to have an external aerial, so I didn't use DAB for ages after I bought the stereo, but in the end I could bear Radio 1 and local radio no longer. I fitted the cabling for the aerial to the back shelf, where I was supposed to glue it to the window, and then glue the aerial bit on top of it on the outside of the window, but much to my surprise it worked without the aerial bit. I just have a little black box on the rear shelf. This is good enough to give good reception as far north as Fort William, as far West as Scarborough, as far south as I have been and well into Wales.

I'm not so bothered if the units become obsolete in a few years - it would just be nice to be able to change the stereo if Honda insist on not providing a DAB option. I'm not asking for just DAB, the unit I have now has FM and AM too, in fact it can even be set to use FM or DAB depending on signal strength when stations broadcast on both.

I want my next car to be a step forward - the Civic seems better built, more practical and more fuel efficient. It's just a shame the ICE is both worse than I have now an seemingly devilishly complicated to upgrade!
