MP3 compilation disc

Whilst waiting for my new civic to arrive, I've decided to put together a few MP3 compilation cd's..

Does anyone have any top tips on how the best way to do this is..?

I was thinking about putting all of the tracks onto the root of the disk..
Or is it best to keep them in album folders?

What is the best way to rename your tracks so the artist / song name are shown?

This is probably all written in the car manual, but I don't have one yet!

It depends on how you want to listen to them. If you want to be able to find a particular track quicky, put them into folders. If you are happy just to listen to them as they are, don't bother with folders. You always have the option to listen to them randomly.

If you go to the properties of the track, then go to 'summary' on your PC before you burn them to disk, you can rename them there and add other detail.

LJ, have a look at this lot:

http://www.civinfo.com/forum/forumdi...ix=Built+in+CD

In essence, put each album into a folder, and nothing in the root.
Make sure each track is named so they play in alphabetical order:
01 The name of the first track.mp3
02 The second track.mp3
03 Anything really.mp3

The main display of Album name and track name comes from the mp3 files "tag" which is embedded in the file.

You can view, modify and autogenerate tags and file names (from tags, or from a database on the internet) using the free program Tagscanner.

I really must do a wiki on this...

the more folders you add the longer it takes the car to display the info.

I name my mp3 files starting with the position of the track on the disc.
E.g. 01_Songtitle

Then I put all the files in the root.

This way you will automatically get a "mix" from different albums as all 01_ tracks will be played first, then all 02_

I like it that way.

So which bits of the tags / folder / filenames are shown?

Example, one of my favorite albums is 'Mouth to Mouth' by the Levellers. Track 2 'Beautiful Day' is in a folder
\The Levelers\Mouth to Mouth\Beatiful Day.MP3

the properties of the file:

Is there anything I can do to get the display to show the artist, album, and song name, without renaming it to '01 - the levelers - mouth to mouth - beatuful day.mp3'

LJ - everything looks fine.

The file is actually "02 Beautiful Day.mp3" so it will play in order.
The ID3 tag is correct - it's the stuff you are showing in the second pic, with the Track name and Album name for the main display:

See how the ID3 info is in the upper half of the screen, but the filename is in the lower part of the screen. There's another photo in the Satnav demo in the wiki...

I find Itunes takes care of the file naming and file structures. I create a playlist and from this I use the burn CD option to create MP3 cds on CD RW media. If your playlist won't fit on a single CD, Itunes prompts to to add another blank one.

In the car, I prefer to display the artist rather than the track name.

As per the above photo........

It shows the full track title "Vegas Two Times" in the upper area but only "Vegas Two Tim" in the lower area.

And yet the display is wide enough to display a lot more.

Must be a technical reason for this?

It will only display the first 16 characters of the file name, but it will display the full Track name from the ID3 tag.

It's difficult to do since there are so many different programs that rip the CD to mp3, and so many CD burning programs.

RIP each CD into a folder of its own. Make sure that prior to ripping, you've got the album info from freedb (every ripper will do this).

Burn a CD that has these folders on.

The display illustrated by Pottsy is the EX. If you have another Civic model, the display is slightly different in that on the EX you can select another track whilst its still playing the current track. Hitting the centre of the jog wheel then causes the system to 'jump' to the selected track. On other models you have to go to the next track [perhaps selected the next folder] one by one. The EX is much better. Also:
[a] tracks recorded in .wma rather than .mp3 will take up about half as much file space as mp3 - so you can get twice as many tracks on a disc. You can also mix .wma and .mp3 tracks on the same disc, but don't use the ipod .aac format though.
[b] I use Nero 8 burning software which allows a part disc to be made, and then further tracks added afterwards [i.e. you don't have to finalise or 'close' the tracks first which effectivley seals the disc]. Further tracks will be added in new folders. According to the Civic handbook only 8 folders can be recognised by the player, but I'm sure mines played more than that!

Right, I am now officially confused. It doesn't take much

I burnt a cd with mp3 files on it. The properties of the mp3 files looked like the ones in LoonyJohn's post. I have 14 folders on the cd, each one off the main root directory. I put it in the car and when it displays the info in the top part of the screen, it will only show the first 16 characters of both the Album name and track name.

Pottsy's screen definitely shows more than 16 characters of the album name, is this because there has been a change to the 07 model, or have I done something wrong.

It may be because their are numerous tag versions, and the Civ only reads the old basic version (I think). That tagscanner program will certainly read and set both tag types...

I used TagScanner to sort out the info. Looking through the options in the program it has ID3v1, ID3v2 and APE options. Is the the ID3v1 option or APE the basic
