Who wants a USB/jack/memory card interface for their Civic?

Sign up to the poll & I'll pass the details onto Connects2 in a week or so...

Connects2 offer an interface for previous Civics with Alpine head units to allow connection of USB memory sticks, USB hard drives, SD memory cards & standard 3.5mm jacks from any portable audio source. This means you could potentially have hundreds of gigabytes of songs stored in your car for playback through the audio system using the car's own audio controls, in place of a CD changer.

1GB roughly equals 250 songs = a 1GB USB memory stick / SD card costs less than £20 & is about the size of a potage stamp. Currently available up to 4GB...

250GB USB hard drive roughly equals 62,500 songs ... you could back up your entire song library at home & keep it in your car to play as you wish!!

Don't want an iPod? Use any MP3 player/DAB radio etc to play back through your Civic's audio system...

Sounds cool? Sign up to the petition & let Connects2 know that it'd be well worth their while getting this sorted for our new generation Civics with their Panasonic head units!!

PS - I don't work for Connects2 - I just want one of these things for my car & I think the only way it's going to happen sooner rather than later is to whip up demand.

I am a definite if they can do it, I had just about resigned myself to having to use just a standard aux input and to be able to use a CTAHOUSB001 that works with the Panasonic unit would be fantastic!

I think it is probably more about them having the will to do it... I'd like them to know how much business they'd be missing out on if they don't...

Even the Ipod owners would prefer to use a universal USB/memory card input to the civic sound system, surely. It would allow the connecton of so many different devices.

Looking at the instructions for the current CTAHOUSB001 it appears that if you have a usb device connected and then connect an audio device via the jack socket the jack socket overrides the USB device.

So as long as the power is still maintained to the USB connector when the jack socket is in use the theory goes that you could charge your mp3 while it is playing (if it charges via the USB port normally) or run/charge other USB devices like some bluetooth devices, usb map lights, pencil sharpeners , etc.

Angry

I picked up my new Civic today, and have already ordered and recieved the Connects2 VHOX001 adapter with the 3,5" mini jack input. So if I understand correctly, since my car is new, I have a Panasonic HU, and the Connects2 I bought is useless?

Is there anyway to check if I have the Alpine or Panasonic HU without opening the dash?

As I understand it the VHOX001 is compatible with both the panasonic and the alpine as it simply provides a line in to the back of the stereo for you mp3 etc.

The CTAHOUSB001 provides this functionality and the ability to allow you connect a usb memory stick or similar device with mp3 files on it in a fixed structure and it will decode and play them for you and navigate the folder/file structure with the steering wheel/stereo controls. Unfortunately the CTAHOUSB001 is currently only compatible with the Alpine unit. Unfortunatly the current civic has a Panasonic unit which the CTAHOUSB001 is not compatible with for providing the USB functionality that we want and would like Connects2 to release a version compatible with the Panasonic Unit.

So you should be fine with the unit that you have purchased.

Interesting that so far 47 people have registered that they would like to use or do already use something to connect an external device... that's a ratio of 46:1; 46 want the USB connectivity vs 1 that has the Connects2 iPod connector.

If any business were to ignore the opportunity of selling 46 times the volume of stock (just so far) then they should really look again at where their priorities lie!

I understand that the unit works like the CD changer giving you the ability to view & switch folders & files containing MP3/WMA tracks so you would get the tags displaying track name etc as with a normal MP3/WMA CD.

The dash does need to come apart to access the rear of the head unit... if you are not happy doing that then bear in mind that with the current incompatible units costing around £90, I have been quoted supply & fitting at £150 - £60 basically to get an experienced person to fit it saving me probably 4 hours of work/heartache.

I'd still prefer something for an ipod, but memory card works fine for me. Ad I'd still love someone to make use of the NAV screen...

I know I've mentioned this before but why don't you all just burn loads of CD R/W Mp3s?
Hour upon hour of music and they fit nicely in the centre console box.
Plus, no fiddly controls to worry about or security issues due to having an expensive MP3 player.
