Power rating of Head Unit (satnav model)
Does anyone know what the power output rating of the head unit is?
4x??W according to what standard? I know that this only a very rough guide and many other parameters are important, but I am looking at some speaker options, and one alternative that looks good (MDS Dynamic DC650RS) recommends "modern HU with 4x40W power output". |

Overpowering the speakers would blow them but not the other way round (it's actually important to match impedences (the ohms value of the Head Unit c/f the speakers) |

All in-dash radios are about 12w, because that's all you can get from 14V. To get more you need a DC-DC converter, which on upmarket radios is a thing that dangles from a wire and is installed away from the radio.
12w radios are normally marketed as 45w peak. Peak is of course pure hype. 50w speakers will be in trouble with a 100w amp at full power. But distorting any amp (including the 12w one) will produce square corners on the output wave, which are very likely to damage even 50w speakers. Do no distort any amp/speaker setup! The minimal bass is primarily because the speakers are not in sealed cabinets, so they just are not working very well. Even putting something in the parcel shelf would be an improvement! |
