A little bit of Speaker Advice Needed

Hi
Just wondering if anyone out there has heard of FOCAL speakers. I called down to my local ICE specialist today & he is trying to convince me to put in a set of 130 V Slim or 165 V slim polglass speakers in the front of the civic, which ever fit.

I have done a bit of business with them before and found no problem. He says that they are made by the hand or some **** like that ,but he raves about them.
Because I am not putting in a amp or sub he recommends i spend a bit more on the speakers.
By the way its a 3 month old NHB typeS GT (I sound like a proud parent)

Any Advice would be gratful

I had Focals in my M3 and my Boxster. They were very good indeed, only drawbacks being that you needed a good amp, they took a little while to run in and they are not cheap!

Plenty of reviews on the net, eg:

He is talking about €300 for the speaker & a little more to fit them.
I am happy enough with the fitting charge as there is no way I am going to start taking the car apart.
He will fit infinity's or any thing else if I relly want
but he really recommends these ase there made by the wings of falling angels or something like that.....

Check sensitivity they have. More sensitive speakers -> less power they need for some sound level.
Usually all above 92db is very good.

Hi Nick7
The 130 V slim has a sensitivity of 91dB & the 165 V slim has 93dB so that seems to be ok.

There is another thread somewhere here about the Focals.
As for the sensivity: Yes, the higher the sensivity, the louder the speaker sounds with the same power applied.

e.g. A speaker with 92dB/W/m sounds just as loud at 100 watt as a 89dB/W/m speaker at 200 watt. And a 95dB/W/m only needs 50 watt to be equally loud!
In other words: every extra 3dB you want, requires you to double the power! (Or go for a speaker with higher sensivity.)

But beware: speakers with high sensivity are in general not that linear when it comes to sound reproduction. They tend to add more "color" to the sound. This is not necessary a bad thing, it's merely a question of taste. And whether if you are after hifi or not. (Which is extremely difficult in a car.)

K.

Got mine supplied and fitted for £230 last week. They are starting to sound great now. On the look out for a new amp now
