Reverse Camera Help!
HEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!
Please can anyone who has a reverse camera installed with a Pioneer head unit help. Last week I replaced the standard stereo with a Pioneer AVH-8400BT. Everything went fine with installing it and it has been working fine until i decided to plug in my reversing camera that i bought from here. The camera is wired up, the same as Smig's How to Guide The RCA video cable is plugged into the reverse camera input on the headunit and then i've got a cable from the reverse sensing cable on the HU connected up to the camera red positive wire which is joined to the brown reverse light wire. The only difference to Smig's install is that i have to connect the gound on the camera otherwise it doesn't work. Now the camera works fine in the fact that when i put it in reverse the display is shown on the HU. The problem i'm having is that when i then take it out of reverse it doesn't switch back to the normal screen, it just stays on the reversing camera screen (which is now black because there is no power to the camera) Also when i power the HU on the reverse camera automatically kicks in even before i put it in reverse!? I am now at the point of pulling what little i hair i have out. Any Ideas. |

Go into the settings on your HU .. You have the camera switched permanently on.
On my Pioneer you tap the top of the screen where the little car icon is and select OFF for rear vision. It will still work (properly) when you select reverse etc |

@bison_uk, sorry mate for asking you an offtopic question, but I will be installing my AVH-8400BT in a few days, and I wonder if you have managed to bypass the parking brake thing? Is simple grounding of the P wire enough to make the device fully functional while the car is in motion?

The US version AVH-P8400BH is much more complicated, they need a relay or a switch or something, and a special bypassing tool... But the Europen version is slightly different, so I need a direct confirmation from someone who has done it on this particular model...

The 8400 has something called a double pulse feature built in which means you cannot simply ground the parking brake wire. Essentially the wire needs to be grounded after the headunit is powered on and not before. I bought a bypass from ebay from the US. a company called microbypass make them. Really simple to install just need to connect three wires on the bypass to three wires on the headunit. got mine wired up before i put the headunit in and it has worked flawlessly. to test it a put a dvd in and took the handbrake off an nothing happened, as expected. Mind you i wouldn't put a dvd on when driving, i'm not that stupid. The only reason i've got it is when i'm using my phone as navigation apparently the screen will go blank until the handbrake is on, which makes no sense!! |

So what you're saying is that I can forget using the device in motion (and I'm talking about navi as well as bluetooth, will never play a dvd on it either in motion or not) unless I buy the microbypass thing?
Is there a workaround like powering the device and then doing the grounding? And another thing: did you go for the advanced app mode cable (IU201S), and if you did, where did you run the cable (pics appreciated)? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Last edited by Amused; 15th July 2012 at 16:24. |

I haven't used the HU without the bypass so i can't say for definite what does and doesn't work, but from going on US forums you cannot use the advanced app function when you are in motion. the main reason for getting this HU for me was to be able to run Navmii of my iphone and so i got the bypass straight away.
As long as you ground it after it should work fine. That's why most people use a relay so that the ground connection is made after the HU revieces power. Have a search on youtube and there's a few video's showing you how to do it. Yeah i've got the IU201S cable. i've ran mine out of a hole in the back of the compartment bellow the headunit and then into a brodit iphone holder. i'll try and get a pic up later. |

Thanks, mate.
Some people have reassured me that the EU version will work fine only with grounding of the P brake wire, so I'll give it a shot. Regarding the cable, did you have to drill the little compartment beneath the radio? Did you run the cable straight to the Brodit mount (I suppose it allows a non-Brodit cable like the Pioneer one to be installed into it)? Sorry for asking so many questions, but I need to know that before opening up my Civic, and you know it's not an easy job Final question: where did you install the bluetooth mic? |

Yep drilled a whole in the bottom left hand corner of the compartment (you can just about see it in the 2nd pic) It needs to be a pretty big whole as either end of the cable are quite large, but you'd never notice it unless you really looked for it.
I bought the brodit holder which allows a iphone usb cable to be installed permanantley so that i could just slide my phone in and it would plug in at the same time. Unfortunately the brodit is designed to hold an original iphone cable which is quite slim. The pioneer cable in compariaon is MASSIVE!!! I had to drill a whole in the bottom of the holder so that the cable could come straight out and also had so sand away each side of the holder where the cable sits so that it would be able to hold the much bigger cable. I already had the holder which is the only reason i sanded it down. If i had to buy one again i'd probably just save the hassle and buy a holder which doesn't hold a cable and then just resort to manually plugging the phone in. The mic is poisitioned above the rear view mirror. There is a gap where the headlining meats the windscreen and so it was really easy to trail the cable up the driver side pillar and then accrossthe hadlining to the middle. Any more questions just fire away. |

Mate, you are the man! Both the Impulse conversion kit (LHD) and the Pioneer device (along with the bulky cable) have been delivered to me. I am taking those to a guy who professionally installs aftermarket HU's, but since its his first time with a Civic, he's gonna see some pain now

Fitting my Double DIN: Syxy Milano
It's fairly straightforward to fit. I've never done one before but fitted my F930BT with no issues. Also note that the F930BT has a "safe mode" selector; you can disable the requirement for the handbrake to be on from the menu. However I've just grounded mine and it works perfectly. I have the brodit mount that lets you just plug cables into the bottom (pass-through) and that's perfect as it means I didn't have to modify the holder to fit the larger cable and I don't have to manually plug it in each time. |

@bison_uk, everything done! Installed it, the HU is great. However, there are several issues which I need to sort out today:
1. I forgot to plug in the Pioneer supplied usb cable in order to get the CD-IU201S working... SO no advanced app mode for now, will be back to fix this today. 2. The trim ring issue! As you have probably noticed, the Impulse supplied trim ring is not wide enough to allow the AVH-8400BT release button to pass, so I had to cut a little hole on the trim ring in order to allow the release button to pass, and it looks awful. I need to fix it somehow. How did you do it? Can I see an up-close pic of your trim ring? Thank you for all the help, much appreciated! |

ah yes, the trim ring
![]() This was probably one of the most frustrating parts. Like you, i put it all together then tried to ut a disc in and the screen wouldn't move because of the ring. All i did was sand the inside of the bottom edge down. Did it step by step. took the ring of, sanded it and then tested it until it eventually worked as it should. Not the best peice of sanding i've ever done but it does the job. Andy you can't really see it. i'll get a close up pic tonight. oh and i also snapped three out of the four legs of the trim ring off!!!!! luckily as it's a tight fit it stays in place! And now it means that i can easily remove the ring without any hassle. |

As I've learned this lesson the hard way, I will be asking Impulse to send me another trim ring, I believe I'll do it much better next time Have you started using the Advanced app mode, especially the gps apps? How does it behave? |
