Help! Xcarlink not working right, dash in pieces!!

Not that big a drama but bloody annoying.
Have just fitted Xcarlink iphone/usb/SD and tried out my iphone 3gs before putting it all back together.
It works but the manual says (and this is the reason I chose it)-

"Whilst in manual mode (disk #1) your ipod controls and screen display will remain available as normal allowing you to select albums, artists, tracks etc. all via your ipod/iphone."

This is how I like to do it...just choose a playlist or album on the phone then hit play and just keep bumping forward if a track I don't want comes on.
All I'm getting on the phone regardless of the disk number is "accessory connected" when I go to the ipod controls. It won't let me select any music on the phone. Everything else on the phone works as normal while plugged in though.

Anyone had a similar experience? Probably something simple I'm missing

Hmm, still no joy. Put everything back together but left the cables plugged in. Will see about getting a replacement as this one doesn't do what the manual says it should. At least then I only have to plug the new one in.

edit...oh yeah. just to add insult to injury, I put everyhting back together then realised the 5 fixings screws for the HU were in the passenger footwell so had to take it all off again. Knackers.
Still, I'm over the moon knowing that I can now take the dash apart fairly easily. All thanks to the great guides on here.

cheers

Hey.
Sorry to hear about ** nightmare with the xcarlink. The best option is the hound xcarlink themselfs u can even phone them up. They were really good with me.
My first unit became faulty over the winter after 2 months. But sorted out replacement and "touch wood" its working well now.

I've just fitted an iPhone Xcarlink to mine last week and I leave mine showing disc 1 track 1 and that lets me control the iPhone from the iPhone itself and use my steering wheel controls to skip tracks which is the way I like it. If I select a different number disc to represent a different playlist my iPhone displays the device connected screen and the steering wheel controls don't work the same as in if I press ctrl+ or the skip button on HU it just pauses the track and I can't figure out how to skip tracks so I just use it in manual mode and works fine.
You say that your Xcarlink is iPhone/USB/SD but mine is iPhone/aux/Bluetooth is your iPhone connected to it with the proper round connector with pins or have you got it connected via USB? If you have got it connected via USB it sounds like you've ordered the wrong Xcarlink and should have ordered the iPod one not the USB/SD card one

Nah, it's connected with the proper iphone cable that plugs in the back. But yeah, that's exactly what i tried...leaving it on disc 1 track 1 but I get the "Accessory Connected" screen no matter what.

Oh, it's the iphone/usb/sd/aux one.This one

Cheers for the reply

Oh ok, I thought you could only get either a one for iPod or a one with USB/SD not with both, but I must be wrong. If that's the case maybe it is a dodgy unit. Bit of a pain having to remove half the dash again tho

If they send me one that works then it's just a matter of plugging it in as I left the cables in place. But if the new one is dodgy (although it shouldn't be, I must have just got a duff one somehow) then I will have to take it all apart again. Oh well.

Just a side note, Iv been taking my radio out and putting it back in so often recently that I have just left the 5 screws out. This way when i want to remove the radio i just pop it out. No problem so far and it seems well secure with just the clips holding it in place

Ah, interesting. I was worried that it might rattle or squeak. I suppose even just putting the top ones in would still make it easier as the top bit of trim is easy to get out.

cheers

Well, after getting in touch with Xcarlink, Russell suggested trying another Iphone to see if it was my phone or the unit. Yesterday was the first opportunity to do this and when I tried my friends Iphone 4, it worked. Slightly shocked and a bit annoyed I then tried mine...IT BLOODY WORKED TOO!!!
God knows what happened but I'm just very happy it seems ok now.
Thanks for all the input

No mate, I'm not taking the dash apart. It can stay there. Bought it second hand about 2 years ago, so no comeback really.

I had this problem, and it had me stumped for a while. I found it was because I actually wasn't on disc 1 rather disk 10, ie playlist number nine on my phone. But because the display can only show single digit disc numbers it gets confusing. For me with 15 playlists on my phone if is skip through the disks using the radio control it goes as follows.
Disc 1 - iPhone control : Disc 2 - Playlist 1 : Disc 3 - Playlist 2 : Disc 4 - Playlist 3: Disc 5 - Playlist 4 : Disc 6 - Playlist 5 : Disc 7 - Playlist 6 : Disc 8 - Playlist 7 : Disc 9 - Playlist 8 : Disc 1 - Playlist 9 : Disc 2 - Playlist 10 and so on.

So to get it back to iPhone/iPod control, (the mode that you're after) you have skip discs back until you get to disk one. If it still says accessory connected, skip back again until you reach disk one again, repeat this process until you reach the 'true' disk one whereupon you should get the ability to pick the track on your iThing.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply but I tried every single disc and nothing would happen. Now that it's working ok it goes to disc 1 automatically when I plug in my iThingy.
Bit annoying that it happened but now it works I'm beginning to forget about it
