We've just driven Honda's new iDTEC diesel engine installed in the current Accord. This will go on sale as the range-topping diesel unit in the all-new Accord due next summer.
It's still a 2.2-litre, but heavily modified, with improved combustion and a particulate filter. And this time round there will be two states of tune: the lower-powered one promises around 155bhp and will also have the option of an auto 'box for the first time. The meatier engine is likely to be a manual-only at launch, and you'll get 180bhp to play with. Both engines are promising more refinement and more punch than the current 140bhp motor, although an insider admitted that they are unlikely to serve up extra economy and lower emissions as the new Accord is lardier than the current one. On the move the new diesel feels like a sophisticated device. Less noise filters into the cabin than with the current diesel engine, and it settles down to become an extremely quiet cruiser, especially the lower-powered car. Both engines felt usefully punchier too, even with the smooth-shifting auto fitted; that's likely to be tempered a little by the new Accord's extra weight. Either way it's further proof that despite a late start Honda is really getting to grips with diesel. Our quick test track drive proved that its capable of matching BMW, Audi and Merc for performance and refinement. If the next year's Accord is as good as its diesel engine, it's likely to be some car. Specifications Price: £18,000(est) 0-60mph: 9.0 sec Top Speed: 130mph Combined MPG: 51.0 CO2: 145 g/km Power: 180bhp at 4000rpm Torque: 320 lb ft at 2000rpm Source autocar.co.uk |

Yes it does seem to be coming in the Accord
I am just crossing everything that Honda will also tweak it and pop it in the Civic and CR-V Kremmen you need to bare in mind that the french have been building diesel engines for donkeys years and what they don't know about diesels isn't worth knowing anyway We all know Honda are still learning about diesels - but they seem to be fast learners ( the French & Germans should be shaking in their boots) |

It's not the diesel I'm supporting but the link to an autobox. You need to remember that the extra torque can rip a normal autobox to bits. Was it not the French about 5 or 6 years ago that developed the common rail system ?
All that extra MPG plus extra torque plus not having to continually pump your left leg whilst stick fiddling - lovely |

I welcome this move. ALL models of cars should have this option, a FULL auto box, given the amount of traffic we have to creep through in towns and cities.
IMO, Honda would be very wise to fit an auto box (not the present 'semi' box) to every model, even an option on the Type R!!! |

Clearly yes, auto box is the one thing missing !
That's one of the reasons why I can't make the decision to sell my old 95' Auto Accord to by the I-shift Civic |

Uh oh, the death toll for the Diesel has been sounded, definately wouldn't buy one now, not if it's got one of those awful DPF things on it, they're just trouble.

Ford wanted to make a Diesel version of the ST but the 2.2-litre TDCi – the most likely engine choice for a hot diesel model – doesn’t fit under the bonnet of the Focus. I doubt a Diesel Type R will come out

Regarding extra torque and auto box, Volvo has just released a new kind of auto box (don't remember the name) which is in fact composed of 2 boxes and 2 clutchs. Less fuel, high torque without troubles (they did it for theire diesel engines), no delay between gears even in manual mode, ...
Looks great ... on the paper ... |

When eventually Honda bring out a higher powered diesel S,I don't think that will be enough to sway me to change.Put in an auto or 2 clutch system, then you could be talking.(I too have reservations about the dpf's;had it on my last Alfa and would not have that car again for pennies) |

Just like the DSG box VW/Audi have been using for over 3 years, that it the type of box Honda should be looking at for the Accord/Civic. Has all the benifits of both manual and Auto boxes. |

You need to remember that Honda have only been making diesels for the last few years - I would think they will get around to a similar arrangement as used in VW group cars
Will need to see how good this new volvo box is going to be ( not heard may reports on Ford's box ) and Auto's are not just for the Yanks some of the best cars in the world come with auto boxes |
