[Other] Auto sidelights

Hi there

Noticed the other day that with my lights set to auto when they eventually come on they always seem to come on as sidelights-dippedbeam at the same time.

It doesn't seem to come on as sidelights first, then dipped beam.

Anyone else have this problem? I know that there is a thread regarding the dipped beam not coming on early enough but I wonder if your sidelights ever come on seperately to your dipped beam?

The side lights and head lights come on together in auto mode.

I rewired the front positioning lights that they come on all the time (if ignition is ON).
And fitted white LED lights.

Ok thanks.

Wonder why they don't allow for sidelights to be turned on first then dipped beam?

I mean that's how I would normally use my lights in manual mode.

Keeping cost down I suppose. If they operated like that it would make it a little more complicated.

I never have understood the need for sidelights. If its light, no lights, if its dark, then dipped beam.

Until the European law changes (when we'll all have the Volvo style lights on all day scenario) I cant see the point in them.

...and that should lower your MPG and increase your carbon footprint !

That will also be the time to thank the Civic rear spoiler for blocking most of it out

The leader of the European parliament in Brussels isn't Hercule Osram by any chance ?

What was wrong with the late 80's "Dim Dip" system ? That would be better than full blown dipped headlights all day. Especially when you get the normal wonky headlight brigade.

I prefer to use sidelights when it gets dusk, I think it definitely helps particularly with a black car. Also sidelights allow for your rear lights to come on without needlessly dazzling ppl in front when it is still light.

Each to their own I guess, but I have always found them useful to have as an interim to full dipped beams.

It's illegal to drive on sidelights alone in the UK. If you consider it dark enough to use your lights, then you must use your main lights - not position lights.

Technically if you were driving through a tunnel etc and your sidelights only came on then you would be breaking the law before your main dipped beam was illuminated (I guess?).

Side/Position lights are for use when you are parked only.

People that use front and rear foglights also break the law if they use them other than in, well, fog!

Snow and rain are not classed as 'fog'. Using them in these conditions causes glare and makes other lights (brake lights and turn signal indicators) very difficult to see, especially on motorways.

Totally agree, this really winds me up. The boys in blue should charge the offender with "Driving without due care & attention"...

Cheers,

I'll second that, fog lights, the clues in the name!
And once someone is behind you, they can be turned off!

Front fog's are for show only it seems,I once tried them in dense fog,no real help!

I NEVER drive with sidelights on.
They are meant as parking/positioning lights, not driving lights.

Well I have to have my lights on during the day and night now as the law was changed over here in Poland. It is now an offence not to have your full lights on all the time - when you drive that is!

Yup I second all the opinions about ppl with their fog lights on when there is no fog! It just is totally stupid! Then there are the ppl who think it's "cool" to drive about with sidelights and fog lights! I don't understand what they want to do with that! maybe it's because the sidelights and foglights are at different posistions on the front of the car? Either way stupid!

Last but not least I was driving on the motorway in fog when I almost ran into the back of someone who had "darkened" their back lights to the same colour as their car. From about 20 metres away it looked like they had no lights at all!

I also didn't know that it was an offence to drive with only sidelights but as I said that I only have my sidelights during dusk when it is still bright but not dark enough for you to need illumination on the road. You learn something new every day!
