it has to be pitch black. it is really useful when driving at night and one looks for something in the middle box, so you don't have to light the full roof light which will make you blind.

Yes it is standard.
Red on the R and blue on the others.

Easy to miss.

I broke mine trying to make it brighter, so I fitted a bright clear red led with variable resistor. It points at the gear leaver after a lot of adjustment, looks ace at night

Yep, my wife said she noticed the blue lamp above the gear stick, but I didn't. It has not been dark enough when we have been driving i suppose. We have only had the car for a month, so I guess that I will notice more details.

Its not very bright, the BMWs have small orange lights front and rear but they have two so it makes it more visable.....seems to serve no purpose in the Civic as its not actually bright enough to illuminate anything apart from your finger about an inch from it and even then it still not bright.

on mine it's really enough to light the middle area when it's really pitch black outside, eg on the countryside. when driving in town it's not that visible. as I said before, in these conditions it's useful for e.g the to look inside the boxes while driving without blinding the driver, though I agree the blue light in the 1.8l had a more intense feel.

fon the fun part, it scared the hell out of my girlfriend when we first drove the type-r by night: for a second she thought my hand was covered with blood!

My dash is nowhere near as bright as that even when I turn the brightness dial to full

I can barely see the steering wheel button illuminations or the main console illuminations on mine - have you carried out a mod to make them that bright, if not, I think a trip to the dealer might be in order as mine is positively dull compared to that

It's one of the things that really disappointed me about our Civic when we were looking into buying one we came on the website and saw that pic and thought wow, when we got ours we took it out on the first night only to be completely underwhelmed - must try and get a piccie of ours for comparison

It's just a long exposure on the camera that makes it look brighter.

And one thing to remember, don't know what UK spec cars are like, but here in Finland (and I suspect most of Europe outisde UK), the lights (side & dipped) are constantly on even when set to off. To see the little ceiling light the lights have to be physically turned on, i.e. the light switch has to be rotated to ON. This is the same for the fog lights and headlight washers, they also only work when the lights are set to ON. Easy to forget when your lights are constantly shining...

Funny never noticed a red light when coming down the motorway in the early hours last week ?? Have they stopped doing them on 08 models or is this something else that does not work ??

Just have a look up - it's the little hole between the two circular map reading lights:
