Extra rear positioning lights

Should somebody be interested, there is a way to add 2 positioning lights at the back.
The “unused” fog light can be used as a positioning light, see picture.
Still the original fog light remains unchanged in function.

Normally the car does not have the 2 lights next to the Honda logo;
( well it does not in Belgium...)
See how it normally looks like.

I am a bit confused. You have changed the fog light into a position (tail) light, and the dummy one on the other side so they come on with the lights?

Is your fog lamp now used as a position light and a fog light, meaning it has two lamps in there? The other light has just had a low output lamp fitted?

It looks good, actually. I would be more interested in just wiring up the second fog to work with the first, rather than used them as tail lights. Do you know if there is a limit on how much light or how bright the tail lights can be to stop dazzling outher drivers?

The original fog lights remains the original fog light.
As soon as you turn on the fog light, the extra positioning light goes off and the original fog light burns at full strenght.
It is a simple wiring.
I installed the same light bulb (21W) in the non used fog light.
When turning on the lights, this second lamp comes in series with the original fog light, resulting in an output of about 5W each, since they only get 6V each. ( half the voltage result in 1/4 of wattage).

The most difficult part is to make the hole to fit an extra bulb connector.
You have to make the same hole as the original fog light, buy a second fog light holder and connect between red wire of licese plate light and original fog light yellow wire.

I have done this while I was installing the backup camera so I had access to all the wires...

If you realy want to do this and you know nothing about removing pannels, drilling holes, wiring ... ask a friend who can ( or visit me in Belgium ha )

Doesn't that put a heavy load on the fuse and feed wiring though

Allan,

When the fog is on, it consumes 1.4A (and the extra bulb is off).

When the fog is off, the two 21w bulbs (fog and extra) are running in series, so consume a total of 0.7A, ie less than having the fog on. So there is no extra power consumption (though I wouldn't worry about hanging an extra few amps off a lighting circuit anyway!)

My calcs are:
I=W/V ie 21/14.4 = 1.45A
R=V/I ie 14.4/1.45 = 10 ohm
In series: 20 ohm, so I=V/R ie 14.4/20 = 0.7A

Would it be possible to wire these up as turn repeaters

Not sure what the rules are on having red American style repeaters. Style rules, of course, may dictate anyway!

Pottsy is right
I did check this out first , the fuse is 7.5A, there are a total of 8 x 5W bulbs, resulting in 40W, this is about 3.3A. So there is no problem adding the extra 0.8A

This is how the connector looks like: bought it from the dealer incl bulb for 9 Euro (if I remember correctly).

Here also a picture of the hole you will have to make.
First make the round hole (use a vacuum cleaner while drilling), then carve the 4 notches. afterwards vacuum the light for leftovers.

If you want to come over to my place in Geraardsbergen I am willing to help.

Stef, does the above mean that you have a circuit diagram for the 2006 civic ?

Yes WoolyCiv, I have most of the circuit diagrams.
Unfortunately I got then from my French speaking dealer, so some comments are in French on the diagrams.
They are in pdf format and I did rename the titels in English.
Total about 900Kb. Give me your Email and I send them to you.
Stef. Email me a stephans@versateladsl.be

EDIT: Pottsy: The files are now here:
Civic 06 wiring diagrams + to do on my list
Thanks Stef!

Pottsy,

Your electrical skills are obviously better than mine- is there enough capacity to say fit a twin filament bulb 5w/21w, the 5w for tail light and the 21w for the fog light. With the bulbs wired in parallel?

This would make the existing fog light a tail light, while retaining the fog light capability - the existing blank would then become a dual tail/fog light.

There are certainly cars around with three bulbs per side for tail lights so brightness shouldn't be a problem - Volvo 480 for instance.

Yes, that would be dead easy, and there would be plenty of capacity.

Mike,
My diagram works perfectly, and does not affect the original fog light capacity! It is illegal to have 2 fog lights, next to the licence plate.
Furthermore the Civic original has 4 rear light, adding the 2 extra using my diagram, makes 6. The 2 fog lights in series have exact same capacity as a regular 2x 5W bulbs.

We have had this discussion before, it is not illegal (here in the UK anyway). The Lexus IS200 has round fogs either side of the number plate, as did old Ford Escorts. There are numerous current and past cars like this, so it cannot be illegal.
Retro fitting may be a different matter, but I doubt it. There are regulations on brightess and spacing from other lights, but you are allowed one or two rear fog lights.

Well better be safe than sorry.
Just think that with a Civic you would be driving in front of a car , so the guy behind you would have 2 fog lights hitting him...
And 2 triangular exhousts
And 4 rear lights
He could be calling the police stating he saw a UFO
