BTW, headlamp washing does not have anything to do with the kind of bulb inside... It is only a matter of paying for the facility to clean the mud on the glass. Actually, from what I have seen, it does not wipe the surface clean, but wets the glass with a water jet so the glass+mud combination is more transparent. But unless you have wipers for the headlamps, positive cleaning is not possible. It is only a washer and is useful to a certain extent.
I belive the washers are there to cool the light unit down. My passat squirts its headlight washers on its own if they have been on for a while.
Id like to know if anyone who has them is impressed with the HID lights. I did not think they were much good on the demonstrator i tested.

Well I first test drove a car without them then one with them fitted, both driven on the same evening on the same stretch of road.

The HID's are FAR better than the normal lights and it wasnt a trick of the mind as I was testing a Diesel against petrol and wasnt aware that one didn't have HID bulbs. I made a comment on the lights being far better in the second car at which point the salesman told me it was HID equiped.

Honda seem to err on the side of setting the HID's too low. I move mine up a smidge and they are great. Not been flashed so I guess I have not set them too high

So in summer nights, the front of your Passat should be wet
It is the first time I ever heard of cooling the lamps with exterior washing... Are you sure that it is not due to a fault that triggers the pump? Are other Passats the same?

I can see better at night with HIDs. Of that, I am sure....

I'm just not convinced on the HIDS, i just don't think they're bright enough compared to other cars.

Does anyone have experience of this - I am I right in thinking if I buy and fit the nozzles that the headlamp washer system will function?? or is it more than that??
As an aside it seems strange to fit all the plumbing for a non functioning headlamp washer system but not the wiring loom for the fog lamps!
The nozzles are motorised (i.e. they're behind the blanking plates and move forwards on operation), so you'd also need the wiring in place for them I guess

There not motorised PhilA, they use the high water pressure to extend the telescopic arms the nozzles are fixed to.

My Civic 1.8 Sport has the headlight washers but I wish it didn't or at least they made a separate switch for activating them. They waste so much fluid and leaves the whole front a wet mess of cleaning fluid.

I'm thinking about disabling them for good or maybe have the Honda shop make a switch for it, which is probably going to be an expensive fix for the problem.

So my advice is that if it is optional on your Civic, don't buy them.

If you have HID Headlights then you have to have the washers by law in the UK, Not sure of Denmark, Then disabling them would be illegal.

Uuh, yes. But you see, Sport level everywhere else doesn't include HIDs. A Sport Civic outside the UK has normal halogen bulbs and headlight washers. Strange combo, I know. I would not have minded paying a bit extra for Xenons on my 1.8 Sport.

Here's a pic of a Finnish Civic with washers and without HIDs.

Oh, and the picture was taken last February. Haven't seen that much snow since then.

Interesting! Different countries have different needs!

Personally i'd love a bit of snow down here this year but we seldom get anything worth mentioning. I'm sure you're sick of it anyway!

In the Netherlands that bit is €1000.. I couldn't justify that for some extra light...

Well, I could justify it
I had to upgrade from 'sport' to 'executive' option though, which means xenons+glass roof+dual climate.
Xenons vs halogen light IS big, especially when driving lots over night on non-highways, which I do quite a lot over summer, and visibility of road is extremely important. More light = more visibility, and less strain on eyes aswell.

Can't complain about the lights, maybe because most of the roads in Holland are well lighted (correct english?). That's why I can't or maybe don't want to justify the € 1000

On UK spec, the Sport has HID lights and headlightwashers. However some of you may not realise that the washers for the headlights only work when the lights are ON.

I think HIDs are a lot brighter - the blue white light is much better than standard lights - more like daylight.

HIDs are also on automatic adjustment for height and mine seem to work OK.

You can have my set of headlight washers

Here in denmark we have daylight running lights and the light are always on and so are the headlight washers.

My civic holds around 6,5 lites of washing fluid. My old Pug 206 only held 2,5 liters. But I have to refill my civic more often.

But I'm not bothered. The ride in the Civic is so much better
