Front Fog Lights

I accidentally ordered the incorrect mainbeam bulbs and ended up with H11 Extreme white Xenon bulb (pair) from http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk. However as they are the correct ones for the front fogs I thought never mind I will fit them and order the correct bulbs for the mainbeams.

Problem is I cannot figure out how to remove the retaining bolt for the fog lights. It looks (I can only see it using a mirror) like it is a socket headed bolt but then again not being able to see it correctly it could be a standard hexagon headed bolt. Does any one know what type of bolt it is and what size? Also does it need to be completely removed or just losened?

Knew I should have returned these bulbs!

You need a 10mm socket and a couple of extensions (if the car is on the ground). Bit fiddly isn't it!

Just to add - didn't take the thing out, but looking at the exploded diagram it looks like you should remove the bolt and swivel the light forwards.

Thanks for the info Pottsy -When I get the chance (and the nerve to try - I should think that the bolt will be an absolute b*****d to replace if it has to removed fully) I will attemp it ad let you know how I get on.

Pottsy I can definately say that we where both right, the bolt is a 10mm hex headed and needs to be completely removed, it is also easy to drop and loose under the water reservoir !

It took me ages to retrieve it from where it had lodged. If ayone else is thinking of attempng this a god tip is to place some blue tack in the 10mm socket so as the bolt unscrews it is pressed into the blue tack and retained. Hindsight is a brilliant commodity .

I did learn where the washer pump is though and after rooting around under it for an hour or so I now feel that I know it intimately!

As you can see from the above photo there is a height adjuster built into the fog light housing.

A last comment - Don't do as I did go out for a bit of liquid refreshment then think on returning home it would be a good time to try and change these bulbs.

There is nothing like an easy to get to adjuster for little jobs like adjusting the lights etc...................................and that is nothing like easy to get to

Well done for finding it! Yes, the odds of that bolt coming out all the way down balanced in a socket are quite slim, they really should advise the blue tack/chewing gum option in the manual.

Thanks for doing the photos too.

If it hadn't been so late and I hadn't had all the problems, would have used my camera insted of the phone for the photos then they might have turned out a little clearer.

Does anybody know the law on having non-working fog lights? Is it illegal?

I'd be VERY tempted to buy the fog light pack and just fitting the lights and not the loom or relay, but I've been advised that it MAY be illegal.

Why would it be illegal?

What's the difference between putting the lamps in there, and a piece of plastic trim that looks a bit like a light?!

I'm not sure; that's what I was confused by; why does non working trim need to be working when it's better than fully working.

Although I don't have a lot to spend and I'm stuck between three options

Speaker upgrade which I REALLY want to do but don't have the know-how or probably equipment
Fog lights (fake or real - I had front fogs on my last car and think I used them once)
Exhaust trim - to be honest didn't even consider until I read a post here saying it was possible

I think the ones Pottsy installed would be so much better.

But I don't even know what a crossover is mind about how to wire one up!

I did the same upgrade as Potsy and you don't need to worry about the crossover. All the coonections are clearly marked and you really can't go wrong. If you take your time and think things through it's really as simple as wiring a plug.

I can do that!

I've also got the 1.4 without the tweeters; so my trim doesn't have tweeter holes; do I need to get new trim too?

PS. I've mentioned this to Pottsy but if anyone around Manchester/Cheshire has done theirs or knows how then I would be willing to pay, I just don't trust the places around here as they REALLY don't know the Civic.

I didn't realise that was an extra on the higher models? Is it the fact that it's a 1.4 or the fact that it's an S/SE?
I'm curious though...any chance you could take a picture of the place where the tweeters should be (at the wing mirrors...but on the inside of the car ) it may be that there's something we could do with the paneling that's there.
Unfortunately Manchester/Cheshire aren't really convenient for me......
