The text below is taken from Honda Dealer Technical Support E mail to my dealer in reply to photos of my smashed light and warranty claim. See my picture on registration post. Honda Customer Services had agreed to look at possible warranty claim and instructed dealer to send photos to support claim. The dealer however did not support my claim and stated to Honda they thought it was a strike. They also sent the supporting copies of posts, I had provided, to this web site showing other similar breaks. Also said to me that this break was the first they had seen on new Civic.
Honda:- "We are aware of this website and that they think there is an issue with our foglamps but from all the units that have been replaced and sent back to the Factory/Supplier for analysis they have found that under microscopic inspection that impact damage was the cause of the failure. I have passed your pictures and mail to the QIC Department and to the Factory for them to look at but I think there answer will be the same as mine, but if I hear anything different back I will let you know." So that looks like the end of it At least I now have Grays covers which I am very pleased with !! |

I've been following this fog light problem on a few threads. I don't have a civic (yet), but find it hard to believe so many breakages from impact damage as Honda say. I've had an Almera GTi for 9 years and my Oblong Fog lights are still intact... and that including some 'stone chip ' road driving.
Is there possible a problem with stresses due to the triangular shape?? Or is that to mathematical ![]() |

I've had about 14 cars in 11 years. Never had a foglight smash or even crack before. To find lots of people with identical problems is more than a coincidence I'd suggest.
Possibly impact is the trigger, but if this is the case, size of lense and thickness of glass/choice of material are most probably the issue. The scientist bods at Honda need to do some breakage/smash tests to see how many Nm squared force are required to cause breakage. |

Now it was my turn.
Whats left of the glass is shattered like a windscreen. All tiny pieces. Wondering what the dealer has to say. Going in for the fuel filler fix, screaking drivers side windows and it seems like the car has developed a rattle at the windscreeen. |

Called Honda CS after mine broke and expressed my concern, the agreed to pay for the Fog Light, but I would have to pay for the fitting which they said would be IRO £40 (thought it would be more than that as I thought the had to take off the bumper). Anyway, they made the arrangements with a local dealer and the car went in on Monday.
Went to collect it and.... RESULT they did'nt ask me for any money! They gave me the keys and I asked is that it, do have sign anything or pay. They no, so off I went! |

Something is not right with this fog light issue, I notice from the register today that someone else has registered a smashed fog light but HCS are refusing to accept any liability, which brings two questions; 1) Why is Honda CS helping some and refusing others? 2) Why is there such a big difference in the price dealers are quoting to replace them? |

Just a quick thought. Does anybody else find it difficult judging the distance from the front of the car to the kerb (especially when parking in a car park). I wonder if by nudging the front spoiler against a kerb that the whole plastic assembly flexes..... And PING! smashed foglights!
On the question of why do some people seem to be getting freebie replacements and others not. To my mind, there are 3 possible factors... Either the dealer isn't reporting the damage to Honda in an effective manner, Honda customer services aren't being very customer minded, or what's most likely is that the people who complain politely get the resolution that they're looking for whilst the heavy handed moaners get shown the long finger. Whenever you complain to any supplier or customer service dept, you need to bring people on your side. Also, you need to realise that the people who your complaining to aren't the cause of your problem (they just work there!) So keep it cool, stay calm and reasonable. If you don't get the resolution that you're looking for, politely ask to speak to the person's line manager (but not in a way that makes the person you've been speaking to feel shunned). Don't forget to make notes whilst you're chatting! Damian |
