Automatic cancelling of indicators

We are all familiar with the indicators turning themselves off after completing the appropriate turn, but on my Civic I have noticed that if I signal right and turn left, so that the steering wheel clicks the off switch, then my signal is cancelled even though I have not yet turned right.

I want to know if this is how all Civics behave or whether my car has a defect.

I suppose many of you may not have noticed this problem, but as I live in Milton Keynes with it's masses of roundabouts it happens to me all the time. i.e. I am signalling to turn right and then I have to turn left to go around the roundabout.

I certainly have not had this problem on my two previous cars.

Yep mine does this aswell, my Focus used to do it aswell so I just presume it is the norm as these are the only 2 cars I've driven

Mine does it too when I am going to turn right at a roundabout and have to signal before the short left-hand bend on the approach to the roundabout.

My previous cars all did it too so I hadn't even noticed it before now.

The Civic has a 'lane changing' facility on the indicators. If you just flick the stalk quickly it will indicate 3 times. Are you just flicking the stalk, seeing the car indicate and think it's locked into the direction you want it to indicate ??

I can't say I have noticed the behaviour you have described otherwise.

Oh dear, replying to my own post
I was thinking a bit more about this, and the only roundabout I regularly turn right at has a straight approach to it, so this is why I haven't noticed this behaviour.

It doesn't happen too often, but it did also on my old Civic, and on my Corsa school car. I don't think it is a fault. I know I pre-empt it happening without thinking so as soon as it cancells I am putting it back on.

Thinking more, I know it happnes often after turning the wheel the same direction as the indicator, but not too sure about turning the other way......

Had this in every car I have driven
Honda
Daewoo
Renault
Peugeot
etc

any car should do this the system will cancel an indicator if you turn the opposite way

It's normal I think; as a resident of nearby Buckingham, I will check it out next time I am in MK

The system is designed to do that, imagine making a right turn into a side road, as you complete the manouvre the wheel is turning left, there is a little mechanical device which cancels the signal, no different to indicating right and actually turning left.

I guess the important bit is to make sure you are indicating once on the roundabout, having your indicator cancelled when turning left on to it, a pain as it is, is not that much of an issueal.

I've just picked up a courtesy 1.8 Type S from my dealer whilst they investigate my rear sun blind issue and it does it as well.

My previous cars that didn't were a 2001 Ford Focus and a 1990 VW Golf. I spoke to a colleague at work shortly after posting my query and he had the same feature on his Peugeot 307.

I just found it an odd behaviour.

Strange...you only have to signal when you are already on the roundabout and not before...why do you do that...do I understand your situation?

er you should indicate before you join a roundabout if you are taking the first exit or if your are going around the roundabout to inform the cars behind you and who may be following

Signals are generally overused but approaching or on a roundabout is one time when it really helps others.

Except when people indicate right which I am supposed to guess actually means "I am not taking the first exit" and then go straight on (at a 'standard' 4-way roundabout). Aaaaaaargh!
