Diy Fog Light Covers
As we are off to bonnie Scotland for a few days Thought it would be wise to fit a set of covers to the fogs, just in case. I purchased an offcut of 1mm Polycarbonate sheet from Ebay cost £1:25 inc P&P. Made up the template, transferred it to the Poly sheet, used the wife's dressmaking scissors (which produced an excellent cut line) to cut the covers out , lightly filed the edges and then finished off with fine wet n dry.
Attached to fog lense with double sided tape. Time taken 2 hours. Will let you all know how they perform on our return. Ramsay |

What type of double sided tape did you use?
Not the normal office stuff I presume? I am currently using the Gray52 covers and they are fine. |

I used 12mm Scotch pressure sensitive tape from my stock. Depending on how it performs on my trip on my return from Scotland I will neaten it up by trimming the tape slightly narrower.

Sellers traded under the name of bunaday but I went direct to their own website Fantastic Plastic who gave excellent service, they also Emailed the Tech Spec sheet to me.
I would suggest Emailing the Company, ns@davis-plastics.co.uk as their Ebay site does not list any 1mm material at present. www.davis-plastics.co.uk |

Exactly, I did a test piece some weeks ago attempting to form the "tabs" over by heating the material. Not too sucessful so my next trial will be to form the tabs separatley and then bond them to the sheet. However if this takes up all the clearance around the cutout, chaffing will occur.

Ramsay, your covers for the fogs lights look great.I'm just about to take delivery of a near new 1.8 sport, and I was worried about the fogs breaking after reading other forum pages, but it looks like this will fix it.

i see the corner of your protector is resting on your bumper. if you fog light moves up and down, like mine then this will damage your paint. if the tape you are using is not 100% water proof then they wont last long, and if grit gets being the cover it will end up scratching the fog light and cover and any impact to the cover will be transfered to the fog light glass, which is what you do not want. you also need an air gap to reduce any heat from the fog light to be on the safe side.
i think this way may give more prolems than you are trying to solve. |

Now made my covers out of 2mm thick Makrolon, another ebay seller.
Apart from double sided tape anybody found any other method for fixing them, was thinking along the lines of 'velcro' but the plastic hard stuff not the fluffy stuff. Any one know where I could get some round buttons say 6-8mm dia. I was thinking of this methad so as to allow a gap between the cover and lens so allowing the cover to flex should it get hit by a stone and abosrb the impact. |

I made and fitted covers myself and used velcro dots to attach them.
The dots were about an inch diameter, but I cut them into "thirds" (roughly 120 degrees angle) and stuck one third in each corner. They've been on for over 7000 miles now and are still good. No idea if they've been hit or not, though. I take them off to clean them inside and out, and clean the glass lenses if need be. I got the velcro as a pack of assorted shapes for about £1 in Lidl or Aldi. |

Heat from the bulbs?
I also made a pair of perspex covers for the fogs and before I fixed them decided to heat test using a high intensity bulb at circa the same distance as in use on the car and it resulted in bubbling in the plastic. Now this might not be an issue as the ambient temperature on the car , in motion, would be much lower than on my bench --but, I am going to step the perspex out a bit to allow a bit of air to circulate between the foglight lens and the perspex just in case.
Also the heat caused the adhesive on the x2 side tape to melt and allowed a bit of slip which could lose the perspex "In action" ---Will experiment with heatproof glue dots which can also be removed without too much trauma to the surrounds. Mike |
