Indicator gimmick

learnt this today...maybe others among you also don't know:
Flick the indicator stick gently (not all the way) and the indicator will flash 3 times. Handy for motorway lane changing so you won't inadvertently leave your indicator on.

This is becoming standard on modern cars - even my wife's Citroen C3 does it!

My driving instructor 20 years ago told me that there was no need to indicare left when moving back in to the left hand lane on a dual carriagway or motorway as that is where you are supposed to be. Only indocate when moving into the right hand lane or of course turning corners/roundabouts!

I think these days they are taught not to bother at all!!!

Here's another well thought out one I've never seen before.
I had my windows tinted yesterday and the bloke said not to wind them down for a few days till they cured. So I switched off the electric windows switch on the drivers door panel so the rest of the family wouldn't put them down too early.
When driving home tonight in the dark I noticed that, with the remainder of the switches isolated, only the drivers side window button was illuminated, with the rest unlit, since they were out of action. Makes sense, but I was impressed!.

Well he would have been wrong, you should always indicate any change in lane.

Just did the back and sides, anything on the front renders them illegal. Am intending to post a few pics once i get a chance to clean the car. I think my own dealer will do them for same price, just haven't got round to it yet, too busy spending on essentials, like tinted windows etc. Thanks for the heads up.

Not entirely true. The limit on windscreen and front side windows is different - more light must get in, but you are not prevented from using a lighter tint.

There are other threads on here discussing it, includoing a link to a BBC News page about police cracking down on front windows that are too dark.

Front and side is 70% transmission, general rule of thumb appears to be that standard factory windows are tinted to within about 5% of legal minimum, so to spend ANY money on tinting front is a waste of time, since it will almost certainly render them illegal. Most reputable companies will advise against tinting front, at any level due to the legalities. Trust me, homework done long before tint applied!

So car 1 in the inside lane wants to move out into lane 2 to overtake and gets sideswiped by the car pulling from lane 3 to lane 2 without indicating !

You should always indicate your intentions, and that instructor obviously has little road sense or courtesy (IMO).

I'd back Spud up, although the story is second hand and years old.
A pal of mine was a driving instructor and sat the IAM test. He says he was told by the IAM guy that there was no need to signal a return to the left lane (maybe only the left-MOST lane?) because returning to lane 1 was what you were expected to do after any overtake.

Would make sense if we all did what we were supposed to do all the time.
