HID from EX on non HID models
Correct me if im wrong - but the EX model has HID's ?
If so, is there any reason apart from possibly cost that the HID's for the ex model could be used on non HID models like say a CTR Mo |

Only if they are factory fitted, if they are aftermarket I don't believe you have to have them (they [Hella], never said anything when I put them on my 5 series, and it went through 3 MOT's with em' on, examiner even said he liked them, as long as they are angled correctly, most cops/examiners don't seem to care). I'm looking at a conversion as soon as more people wreck their civics

In most European countries there's there's a law that if you have HID's you need to have headlamp washers AND automatic lamp height regulation.

This is how it is in Holland:
Cars made before juli 2006: You can build in HID without problems Cars made after 1 juli 2006: You can build in HID if you have washers en automatic correction |

There is a long thread about this in here somewhere...
Ultimately, I couldn't find anything one way or the other to definitevly state if fitting aftermarket HIDs without washers and levelers was legal, or not. And just because they are being sold doesn't make them legal For me though the biggest argument against is the insurance angle. From new, HIDs have to have washers and levelers to prevent glare for oncoming drivers. If you fit them without, and end up blinding an oncoing driver, who then crashes into you - will your insuance pay out? Or more to the point, if the chav driver in the opposite direction takes you out, and then claims it was becuase he was blinded by your HIDs... |

I read your comments in the other thread Degs with interest - and although id be confident that might not happen - there is always sods law to say that it might - and so agree with you.
Thats why I was wondering if you got the HIDS from Ex model and the system that levels it or washers etc etc then it could be argued that you have a manufacturer kit that has passed the regulations Of course this is what they do with that EU CTR models that have HID's Id get one of those kits if I could but im sure they are configured for left hand drive and would just as much of a pain to adjust rather than getting a EX model UK kit and getting them fitted. |

aha! - see where you're coming from now Mo
I guess yes, if you fitted the entire kit from an EX, then you would be sure to be legal might take some doing to fit it all - but then equally I guess that at least some of the wiring might already be there, unused... |

i went to my local dealer and asked the same question about changing to hid lights from EX they said you need to change the wiring loom and many other bits it could be done but was too expensive to give quote on.
they also said next time i want to buy a new civ ask at time of order and they will fit them in the factory no prob. if only they said that 4 months ago when i got mine |

Would it be worth contacting a body shop to see how much a new front end would be, lights, bumper, washers etc...? inc painting and fitting?
Not to forget one of Pottsy's rubber bungs for the dash as the light leveller is no longer required. Also working on the assumption that the wiring is in place and OK to use (probably the most expensive part in terms of labour) |

how do you mean leveler no longer required?
lights on their own priced at 400 euro a piece here in Ireland hate to think of cost on a new front end maybe better off driving in to a lamppost claim on insurance not that i would recommend it |

You're right about the factory fitting them. The dealer I was talking too said "so long as you know who talk to at the factory, you can have more or less any option you want - factory fitted."
My ideal car is probably a 2.2 ES with HID headlights. As it is I'd have to go for the much more expensive EX and fit the glass roof if I wanted it. Sat Nav is not a requirement for me. |

The point here was that I really have no need at all for the Sat Nav; I mean I'd actually NEVER use it. It would just be nice to have the Auto Lights/Wipers/Mirror, Folding Mirrors, Dual Zone Climate and Glass Roof without the Sat Nav sucking £1500 out of the budget.

I preferred with my Xenons, keeping my leveller switch to use on motorway journeys. Gave me better distance.

Found this link on another forum. It seems to suggest that even after market HIDs are required the whole headlamp unit should be suitable for HID bulbs, most hallogen units aren't, and once fitted the Head lamp must be self leveling and have headlamp cleaning.

in reply to Locking wheelnut HID lights. I understand under EU law cars fitted with these lights must be fitted with automatic self leveling devices to avoid glare to other motorists. In addition they cannot be fitted as main beams.Thereis also additional electrics to deliver a strike voltage inthe order of 20000 volts. Up side bulb life is supposed to be seven times longer than halogen lights Due to thier claimed penetration in the dark they are supposed to make fog lights redundent. Question why do Honda fit both on the Ex model. Yes i know PROFIT.
