Thumbs up Mugen QuickShift - Review

Hello all

You may have seen my recent guide of how to fit the Mugen Quick Shift. Now that it has been fitted for almost a week and I have had chance to have a number of "proper" drives, I feel that I can comment on the upgrade.

To be honest there is not much to say. However I will start by stating that, with the OEM Type R gear knob, at first the gear changes appear more difficult. By this I mean there is more resistance and there is a more "clunky" feeling. This is most likely to be a result of the reduced length of the shifter stick and therefore the reduced leverage for each gear change.

After a few hours of driving on B roads and numerous gear changes, the QS quickly begins to prove its worth. Previously, when accelerating hard, I often had difficulty getting a clean gear change from 1 to 2. This has completely resolved now. All gear changes are much more positive feeling and there is definitely an improved accuracy for every gear change. I have not had a grinding 1-2 change at all since having the QS.

I have to admit the gear changes do feel much more aggressive and it just makes you want to physically change gear quicker because your confidence in the gear changes is much increased.

In addition to this, my ability to change gear seamlessly whilst accelerating hard has increased greatly in a short space of time. Even with the girlfriend in the car yesterday, When I gave my true love some juice, the girlfriend commented how she couldn't really feel me changing gear... happy days.

Today I fitted the Mugen Gear knob which is not a great deal heavier than the OEM knob. The difference in weight simply improves things even more. Gear changes are more positive again and the "clunkiness" has completely gone even when changing gear more slowly.

Overall, I feel this is a very worthwhile upgrade as my confidence accelerating quickly has increased greatly and I have really enjoyed driving the car more.

I know a few others have this fitted and I'm sure they agree with this. Please feel free to add your opinions and experiences to this thread.

Cheers

Ant

Just to add this is a amazing modification yes a bit pricey for no BHP increase but for shifting increase then YES YES YES

I got the Skunk2 Knob which is much heavier than OEM and Mugen knob and it does help alot with the quick shifter and it just throw's from 1st to 2nd and really does stop the 1st to 2nd gear changing problem

Just to remember tho:

Don't Rest on the Gear Knob

It might shorten life of Transmission (Ive only read this on US sites)

Loved the guide to fitting but i am not convinced this is the best way to spend the £'s. (especially as the standard change is not what i think is my performance limit). At least you are a happy customer

Well in over 30k miles/3 years my OEM shift has not gave me issues?, I do not doubt it may feel better but if you have no issues (and failed to complain under warranty) then i am lost as to how it is so much better?

Its hard to explain but it shortens time to shift yes its a split second but in a drag application it helps and its less time your hand is on the knob and more time steering for a track use
