revs dropping???

Hya I have just brought an L reg civic and have noticed that when I have anything other than the engine on, ie the lights or the wipers my revs drop til the car almost cuts out, it never does cut out but its a pain in the backside! Is this a common problem and does anyone know how to fix it
cheers viki

hmm.. i've experienced this too, but i dont think its anything to worry about. The ECU controls the revs according to the circumstances, for example they are higher when the engine is cold, and then gradually go down as the engine warms up.

Hi Viki,

This forum is for the 2006+ Civic, but you may find someone who will recognise this problem anyway.

Which Civic is it exactly?

When you turn on anything electric it puts load on the electrical system so the alternator works harder. This puts an extra load on the engine soeducing the revs slightly. It could be that on your car the tickover is set a bit slow. Raising the tickover may help.

Does the idle speed recover after lights are on, or does the RPM stay too low?
It could indicate a problem with the alternator, but that would also mean your batt runs flat from time to time.
If it stats causing a problem, like the enigine actually cutting out, take it to a garage.
