Roof bars + glass roof = no go?
Hi all,
I'm looking for either a slightly cheaper alternative to the genuine Honda roof bars and cycle carrier or a cheaper genuine one - my problem is that my 2.2ES has the glass roof and I've been reading that most after market bars aren't compatible with Civics that have glass roofs. I guess I can't bring myself round to paying over £275 for something to carry my MTB - however putting it in the car isn't really an option as (a) child seats in there and (b) my MTB is usually sh*t up to the eyeballs when I've been out! Any advice? |

I use the Thule roof bars and a top box on my 1.8 ES every year so far without any problems.
The Thule bars mount on the steel structure of the roof and do not appear to impose any load of the glass section. |

I have Thule ones (about £130 inc cycle carrier), but it says Civic 5dr non glass roof.
The tailgate being plastics means you can't have a tailgate mouted rack. The only other option is a towbar mounted one, the racks are only £60 for a basic Thule one (have one of those as well), but it is £270 - £300 for a tow bar that scuppers that one. Can't think of any other option but the Honda rack. Sorry Leodis, the above posts appeared while I was penning mine, sorry I did not mean to contradict. I have some pictures of my rack in place....
It shows where the feet fit. Perhaps Thule are being overly cautious by saying not suitable for glass roofs on their website. It takes 3 bikes easily. A good website for bits is snowchains.co.uk - Weissenfels snow chains to buy or rent They have a phone number and are very helpful (where I got all my thule stuff from). You can collect Mon - Fri, but looking at your location, their delivery might be the best option!! Last edited by alanwalne : 2nd May 2008 at 07:24. |

Bought my set at the weekend and fitted them tonight. Dead easy. Went for the Thules (£84 off the net) as the Honda ones were too expensive.
I've got a glass roof but figured I'd run the risk, it's only to stick my plastic canue on. Anyone got any idea what the max weight is with the glass roof? C1v1c Last edited by C1V1C : 13th May 2008 at 22:01. Reason: Added detail |
