Spam PM from Jeanette

A few hundred PMs were sent by a robot under the username "Jeanette" - apologies for this, the account and IP are now banned so no need to let me know.

Seems like a regular activity for someone.

Well done Pottsy. All spammers should be shot once found. What a bl88dy nuisance they are. I get 100s every day for Viagra, heath pills, gambling sites, etc.

Well, SMTP, the protocol used for sending email, is actually very simple. It doesn't check if the sender of the email is valid or not. You can just come up with just about anything you like and it will work, for example:

Welcome to confused .com!

This would explain why I often get spam which is not addressed to my actual email address but to one which is very similar. I don’t bother to read them now and have them forwarded to a spam folder. If I don’t recognise any of the senders they automatically get deleted.

Its still a real nuisance as my system slows down to a crawl while they are downloaded but then that’s what these toe rags want isn’t it. Shame they couldn’t put that intelligence to better use like saving children’s lives. Very sad!
