Type R Grill Badge

Hey folks,

Picked up a Grill and Decal set for my CTR from one of our members. After reading some related posts I had a bash at fitting the badge tonight but with little success. Maybe someone could offer some advice?
  • Firstly I took of the big black cover by removing the 8 or so clips (with two screwdrivers as recommended by someone on here). This went without a hitch.
  • I then removed the two big silver 11m nuts on each side of the grill.
  • I then footered a bit, undid a clip on each side, footered some more, then stopped. Had a think, scratched my head, and got no further ...
Behind the mesh grill there seems to be some sort of cover? Therefore I couldnt get my hand in behind the mesh to fasten the badge? Anyone tell me how I get this part out the way? I tried yanking it off but it seemed to be joined further down inside the bumper? Everything went fine till this stage just didnt know where to go next? Anyone advise?

Also, for the folks who went down the silicone sealer route - how has that worked?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

It is very tight behind the mesh grill and if you have large hands you'll struggle. Quite a few people have stuck them on without any problems.

Have you had a look at this thread?

I have mate but I was still a little unclear on what to do next. I'm not sure how I actually get a hand into the tight space behind the grill? The bit you can see through the grill (that sits behind it) seems to be between the grill and my hand if accessed from the back (that really sounds so wrong ).

Thinking the best option could be just nipping to Homebase and buying some No more nails tape! Anyone know if I would be better with the silicon or the tape?

I managed to get the badge on with no problems apart from a scratched and sore arm but it was a lot quicker than removing everything although very fiddly but not impossible.

After undoing the two bolts and releasing the two clips you can then pull the grill forward quite a bit and get the "arms" that the gray clips engaged with to rest on top of where they were engaged. This gives you a little more room to get your arm in.

Now decide where on the grill you want to place your badge remove the little sticky covers and stick it in place.

The next stage is easier if you are left handed. I first had a practice run in finding where the pins on the back of the badge were. The grill has a tapered surround mounted on the back of it with quite a narrow entrance. So you need to force your arm in at the middle or event slightly to the left hand side of the grill and work it in towards the badge. You will first feel the surround which is a couple of inches deep and then behind that the grill. Feel around and you will then find the pins of the badge. Once you are comfortable with the position of how to find the badge gently work your arm out. This is where I got scratched and bruised the most so go carefully. I now took one of the clips and carefully holding it moved my hand back in and located one of the pins. Now carefully push the clip onto the end of the pin enough to engage it and then push it on as far as you can (don't worry about getting it tight just yet), repeat this for the other pins. This stage may be easier if you can get something sticky to help you hold the clip.

Now to tighten things up, you will probably find that the badge is on but not tight to the grill. So find something like a mini socket driver small enough to let the pin go in and assist in pushing the clip on firmer (If i remember correctly I used a 3mm socket). Now go in behind the grill and locate the pins and put the socket against the clip and push it firm against the grill causing the badge to stick out a little. Now keep the socket and clip pressed against the grill and push the badge on from the outside working each of the clips on the pins down so as not to bend the badge too much.

Once you are happy with how tight the badge is carefully remove your arm and put everything back. Unfortunately if you have very big arms then method may be impossible for you, and if you are left handed the whole thing is a lot easier.

Hope this helps (and makes sense), good luck

Left work a bit earlier today and with a little luck and alot of help from jabberwockys guide I manged to get it. Thankfully! You do end up in a worse way than when you begin though!

Now its time for the decals which, as is always the case with me, didnt go too well at first attempt. The sticker just wouldnt come away. Maybe I used too much soloution. Apparently the official honda decals are actually more difficult to fit, I can vouch for that!

Thanks again mate, it was a big help and might be handy if added to the HOW TO as it doesnt elaborate on this part too much. I'm still undecided on my decals. May hold of on them for a while.

I am happy with mine with just the grill badge at the moment. If I get bored with it I may add them but with the newly added splitters I am more than happy with how my CTR looks - 20 months of owning an FN2 and I still get out of it grinning like a complete idiot
