What rating are they?

The force is usually stamped on the strut body.

Did they ever work well?

When I had my big spoiler fitted I had to lift it from closed position
Aren't there some merc ones that fit and are stronger? Or did I dream that?

On the strut you'll see a rating......460N or 510N...... something along those lines anyway. It's the lifting strength in Newtons. The higher the number the more powerful the lift.

Strut Depot give a 3 year warranty I believe, might be worth a phone call or an email before you order a new set?

I remember right back to the forum start, one of the early complaints on the 8G was weak tailgate struts.

Caught a few out as they whacked their head when it dropped.

I think Honda did beef them up a bit but I don't remember when.

460Nm is what the OEM struts are usually rated at (non Type R) whereas the Merc units are more powerful at around 570Nm (check the Wiki link above) so work well if you've fitted a spoiler.
