Rev limiter = a valuable thing!

Just wanted to express my joy at having a rev limiter - I'm sure my engine would now be a melted pile of metal (or at least in a bad way) if one wasn't fitted to the Civic! The engine just spins up so quick once you go into lift that often barely have time to change gear, and there the needle is bouncing about at 8000 rpm... Anyone else ever have their engines at these heady heights?

Which leads me onto another question - how many years have cars been fitted with rev limiters? Never really red-lined any of my older cars, so wasn't sure!

They are great aren't they, although a little unnerving when it hits the wall, I have bounced mine off the limiter all through the gear box, trying to keep ahead of a mate on the autobahn in an ST Focus.

Yes, it's a great thing, and quite necessary.

Rev. limiters have been around for many years, earlier in a mechanical form (based on centrifugal ignition cut-off)

Yes, it's a sprung part of the rotor arm isn't it on the old centrifugal system (??), much the same as the the old govenor's on steam engines so, you could say they've been around longer than the I-C-E

So, does my Type S 2.2 diesel have one too.
Never taken it that much into the red.
What happens then,- does the engine die on you, in the middle of overtaking. ?

No you get a slight 'Jerk' and you know to change gear, basically the ECU senses the redline and cuts all fuel and throttle control until it reverts to being under the redline. Can take you un awares, mine does it often

.

if you get to the limiter in th 2.2 it has virtually died on you already i don't go much past 3500 - no point.

All fuel injected engines have rev limiters, even the very first ones (unless you tamper with the electronics, yup you guessed it I did once and blew the engine ).

It was a bit difficult on the autobahn, but once we got onto the back roads he couldn't even stay close, the front end of the ST is just too heavy!!

Sounds about right; I found a few test suggestings the ST is a little faster from 0 to 60 mph, but then again it has more hp. Revving is much more fun

2nd gear is usually the one that gets me "bouncing" off it.

When you drive a car that loves to be revved and sounds so good hitting the rev limiter is inevitable occasionally (well alot actually )

Still gives me a shock everytime though

I've touched my limiter twice in 10 months. I think it kicks in at 8,400 or 8,250. I still always change at 8K on the dot, usually by ear. I did read somewhere that hitting the limiter is not a good idea. I'll see if I can find the info and get back to you.

Here you go, courtesy of evilowl from CTRO:

Basically when you hit the limiter it puts a lot of strain on the engine and drivetrain. If you brush it now and again it won't cause any harm but over time, if you are hitting it a lot, the timing chain will be stretched and can even jump teeth which will eventually wreck the engine if not checked and adjusted.
