Reverse Gear?

Have notuce that when I select reverse to get off a quite steep drive my reverse gear does not seem to engage properly?

It goes over and down but when I lift my foot off the clutch it is not in gear, causing me to reselect ,normally causing a bit of a crunching sound? as I hurrilly try to select the gear as I am in the middle of the road.

Never have this problem on the flat?

Is this normal?

Regards

I am experincing this kind of problem (which i do not consider it as problem) sometimes. My father had this problem with his civic 90s and when i putted the reverse on mine and did that characteristic noise he asked me "what's that noise". My aswer" "Its a CiviC".

Your civic must be at a complete stand-still to be able to engage reverse without a problem.
As you mention you're on a hill, is there a possibility that your car is rolling slowly when you try to engage?

It could be the Synchromesh... try going into 3rd and then reverse (without letting the clutch out)...

If this stops the problem then you've got a dodgy sychro on your reverse gear - take it to the dealer...

doubt if reverse has a synchro, thought it was only the forward gears personally, but happy to be proven wrong

Civics have a speed sensor that will not allow the gearstick to move right of the 5/6 plane if there is any forward motion of the car.

IIRC that's only for more than 6kph.

rear does not have synchro (word from my favorite honda mechanic back when I had an issue with 2nd gear on my FK2) and never had on any car I had. plus the gears are straight ones (not helical and permanently meshed (engaged) like other gears which are (dis)engaged using a dog clutch linked to the shift lever).

so one has to be extra careful when engaging rear, else one might just wear out the gears to death.

I've had this problem too and took the car to the dealers. You have to be stopped and not moving before engaging gear. Sometimes the gear stick also sticks half way in gear and you have to force it out. The dealer told me that it was because the gearbox was new and still tight! Mine has now stuck twice in 9 months. They recoomended pushing the gear stick to the left hand side before engaging reverse as this will line up all the gears!
