i spoke to honda uk today - there is an official replacement carbon fibre syncro component to replace the alloy fitment curently in the gearbox.
my dealer has ordered the parts and i'll report back.
btw - i also have poor paint finish / stone chipping and rust on the doors as well as unnacceptable corrosion on my front callipers and a creaking windscreen

my audi TTS order will be placed this weekend.

shame as i love the type r but this is frankly ridiculous and unacceptable.

Does any of you have a bulletin number, fix number or parts number when it comes to 3rd gear synchro replace?

Thanks!
I don't know if it's the same TSB # as it is here in the US, but maybe this will help Honda TSB 08-020 April 12, 2008 (3RD GEAR) - 8th Generation Honda Civic Forum

I also had the 3rd gear grind/pop out problem. It was the only thing I hated about my Si other than the cheap paint. Since getting the fix, I've gone close to 5000 miles without a grind, or a pop. If I could only get Honda to do a recall on the paint, I'd be golden.

Thanks Mate! I got it already. I need something from Europe which apply to FN2 not Si. Of course they may take my transmission apart and replace the synchro without the bulletin but I won't have guarantee that the part used is the new revised part That's why I am trying to find the details from my post above. It seems that they really do not know what I am talking about but at least they have good intentions.

My understanding is it is the same gearbox. I could be wrong though.

I find that if I gun my Type R and give it some welly it's harder to get in gear. I'm not sure which ones at the moment but it sounds like the same issue to me.

Mine will be fixed soon after a complaint to Honda Poland I have made... the thing is... I still do not have a bulletin (The US parts numbers from their bulletin do not match) and I am afraid that they will use the same not revised parts and problem will come back!

Hi All

Took mine into my local Honda Dealer today, asked them about all warranty claims. Mine is a Type-R with 1000 miles on a 57 plate. She said "let me have a look".

So she did, there is a Handbrake Recall, 3 rd Gear recall and Flywheel Recall out for mine.

Parts been ordered, goes in next saturday to be sorted. Got a courtesy car too

Great service from Honda again.

Anthony

Do you have a '08 or '07 type r? (can be found in your VIN number)

3rd and 4th syncro replaced. Nothing changed. I recently noticed that very similiar things are happening to 1st and 2nd gear. What do you think? Does it have something to do with fly wheel?

Going to leave my FN2 for 1 year service today, have been making remarks that the 3rd gear is a problem, hopefully they will fix it... I'll keep you posted on what the workshop will tell me.

Thumbs up 3rd gear

Hi
I had the same problem with my type r when i first got it,i was some times crashing the gears only in 3rd,i have found that if u change gear with a lazy clutch foot [not pressing all the way down] it did crash, but now i have 8,000 miles on the clock it has got so smooth now.

The dealer called me, said he had gone for a test drive but could not find any problems getting the 3rd gear in place. Just my normal luck I guess... Going to take him for a ride tomorrow to see if it gives any trouble then...

The 3rd gear only ever pop out is when they are not fully engaged (mostly due to clutch not fully pushed down).

Leem, as someone who has experienced this problem i can assure you that it is not due to driver error.

You know when its going to happen as the shift into 3rd just doesn't feel very positive. One of 3 things usually happens

1. 3rd gear fails to engage

2. 3rd engages but only after some 'grinding'

3. 3rd gear engages but immediately pops back out again

Fortunately this problem seems to have resolved itself in my car (i hope)

R-2, I know that there is problem with the gear box. Like you said, you would know if it was successful most of the time. What I usually do is, if i felt it did not engage 100%, I would pull it back to neutral and push it back to 3rd or skipped to 4th.

Things doesnt usually just heal by itself if theres a genuine problem, maybe most driver have just adapted to the gear box

Would be very interested to hear how others adapted or resolved the problem.

I just assumed that the gear box had 'bedded in' (don't know correct technical term) properly now. Certainly the whole gear box now feels slicker.

I don't think i changed my driving style as the problem only happened intermittently.

I too would be interested to know if others have had the problem apparently resolve itself.
