I have also problem with 2nd gear more than 3rd gear. On the beggining I had a problem with 3rd gear, right now is almost unnoticed, don't know why, In the meanwhile has been pop up problem with 2nd gear. Dealer has noticed this problem and syncro 1st+2nd gear has been ordered. I'm wondering what did you wrote above. That Fly wheel could be responsible for improper working of gearbox Cheers |

Got my car back from the workshop now, they could not find anything wrong with the gearbox when they went for a test drive. I also went for a drive with a mechanic by my side but the gearbox didnt crunch in 3rd at that time. At least I have pointed out that there is a problem now and it has been recorded. Hopefully that will help if any recall is done later... or something...

Thought it would be of interest to let you know that I have on 07 plate type R and had this problem. 3rd gear was notchy and sometime popped out. Spoke to the dealer and they were aware of the issue and replaced the 3rd gear synchro. The gear box is now incredibly smooth across all gears and 3rd is no longer an issue.

This third gear issue doesn't always happen in my 08 type r, but when it does it makes a grinding noise and pops out. Now it makes me quite cautious everytime i go in to third and doing slower gear changes.
I have booked the car in for my dealers to look at next week, but they told me they haven't heard of this problem before. Would it be best if i pointed them in the direction of a 3rd gear synchro fix? |

Its a well known issue. Try showing this thread to your dealer. Has been a problem on the US Civics too.

Well, according to my information, the 08 Type R specification should already include the 3rd gear synchro fix. However, as your description exactly corresponds to this problem, pointing them to this fix can certainly make sense.
Besides, tell the dealer to search for the corresponding service bulletin. Each dealer will have access to this information. My dealer also told me first he didn't know of the problem, but a look in their database confirmed the existance of a service bulletin regarding this problem. Hope your problems will be fixed & that you can enjoy your Honda again (and especially the shifting Kind regards, John |

thanks for the info guys, i only picked my car up yesterday and this is the only issue i have with it. It seems ok when you use more force to put it in 3rd, but any kind of laziness with the clutch or gear change it is more likely to happen, very intermittent as well.
I really hope this problem can get sorted, then i can really enjoy the car. I've had a quick read through some of the posts and it does appear that this is a well known issue, which is why i was surprised my Honda dealer said they have no knowledge of this problem. |

Is your car a new one? Sometimes the problem improves as the car is run in. Although i had to put a few thousand miles on mine before it went away.

I think i had done at least 3000 miles before i could say the problem (which was only intermittent) had gone. I'm still going to mention it to my dealer though when my car goes in for its 1st service at the end of november.

Ewell Honda told me that if they took the gearbox out and found the syncro to not be defective I would have to bear the cost for labour. Couldn't be bothered to argue. They clearly just dont want to dedicate the man labour to do it.

I took mine in today for my dealers to have a look at the problem. We went out in a test drive and I shifted in to 3rd many times and could not replicate the problem, typical really.
But the guy was really helpful and still acknowledged the problem as he got the details about the 3rd - 4th syncro fix from a service bulletin, so now the parts are ordered and will be leaving my car there for 2 days this week. Glad that they agreed to fix it without any hassle. However I drove 50 miles today and the gearbox was fine, but still going to take it in for the fix. |

I've had mine since the beginning of October, 07 plate with 11K.... 3rd syncro problem was apparent straight from when I was leaving the dealership!
Bought it from Crewe, but took it to Warrington dealership after a weeks driving. When I called them to arrange, the chap I spoke to stated he'd never heard of such a problem. However, upon arrival on the agreed date, it was clear it was a known issue, as even the sales man was discussing it with me. Strange that the first chap denied knowledge of the problem. Me and the tech took it out, with him driving it, and he was fully aware of the problem, and also that it was intermittent. On the final stretch back to the dealership, he crunched 3rd when coming from 4th! NOT A NICE NOISE! He said that, even if it hadn't have popped or crunched during the drive, they would have replaced the 3rd/4th syncro anyway. Now I wonder why the previous owner didn't bother to sort it out! Grrr (>_<) |

Mines was great at the start but the more miles that go on it the more the 'Third' gear issue seems to be occuring - not ideal. I have also noticed that when in higher revvs that when I put my foot on the clutch to change gear, the gear knob lunges into my hand as it seems to just jump out of the gear.
Will speak with my dealer about this on Monday I think |
