3rd gear

I've the car for about a month now and I'm starting to think I have a problem with 3rd gear. The change is not the smoothest and half the time i have to really force the change, even crunching the gears some times.. This is my 2nd type r and the old one had a gearbox as smooth as the inner leg of a cuba cigar roller..
Anyone else have the same problem??

cheers.. I did search for an existing thread, but came up with n'owt.. i guess I'll see what happens over the next few hundred miles and take it from there.. hopefully it's a problem down to a new over tight gearbox..

I didn't have any problems with the gearbox on my previous EP3 type-r either (except the 2nd gear when motor running cold). now, with the FN2 R, there is something wrong with the 3rd gear! the problem was worse when the car was new than now (~10 000km on the clock) but it still gets me mad..

its actually fine if you always remember to push a little harder for 3rd. my brother drives my FN2 now and then and always gets 3rd to pop out a few times in a trip. but whenever i drive it... it never happens. i read countless complaints about 3rd gear before owning mine so i guess i preconditioned myself to be careful with it

When I first picked up my car, I noticed that getting into 3rd was a bit stiff too.
Went straight back to the Dealership and the top techie checked it all out and could find nothing wrong. Just told me I will get used to it and I have in the 3 weeks that Iv'e had it. No problems at all now.
Tis a bit like getting used to a new wife, I suppose. After one has traded in the older version.

I agree, I can manage with it (the 3rd gear, not the wife) now but I still don't like the problem. I think it doesn't bother so much when driving hard than in everyday use. ok, I can confess, I don't drive fast ALL the time!

Mine was fine up to about 250 miles,
340 miles on clock and sometimes 2nd to 3rd needs a bit of brute force!

My 3rd Gear seems OK at 250 miles. I find the Honda gearbox is one of the very best.

If your arm is at full stretch for 3rd, like it is for me, there is a chance you dont push it fully into gear - try moving the seat forward a bit.

honda know that 3rd gear is rubbish, they are currently still developing a replacement for this. been down to honda dealer a few times but all i can do is wait for either honda to contact me themselves (they have my car no. etc) or me dealer to give me a ring. theres no way i'm living with it cos it seems to be getting worse on my car...

when i took the car out for a test drive,on the way back to the stealers it crunched real loud in third the salesman looked at me and i thought ,what a d*ck i look.
that was way back in march,i picked mine up in april and i now know there is a 3rd gear issue, but i havnt had mine jump out or crunch in third at all so i guess i'm lucky.

I was in the dealer this week talking to the guy on the service desk, he has a type R, the way he described it was "I have a type R the one with the 3rd gear problem", he was well aware that the R has a problem and so are all the dealers by now, seems Honda have another issue with the Civic, they really seem to have dropped the ball with this new car.

It must be very annoying to have the third gear problem. It nearly put me off buying the type R when I read all the posts on the subject. The dealer I spoke to reckoned it was just in peoples minds once they heard about it, but I was still sceptical. I test drove the demonstrator (twice), and could not find fault so went ahead and ordered. Mine seems OK, touchwood. Maybe the newer ones are OK

For those who have the 3rd gear problem, Good luck getting it fixed.

Just coincidence,
I once owned a Seat Ibiza GTI cupra sport that had the same 2nd to 3rd gear problem, but went away with some miles on the clock.

I don`t know if some Type R`s are worse than others, but mine needs a bit of extra force (2nd to 3rd) one gear change in about twenty.

I hope I dont get this 3rd gear problem when I get mine. Hope there is a fix by then! Coz I don't want to be crunching gears.

When I took the CTR on a test drive a few weeks ago I had an issue putting it into third gear and mentioned to the salesman sitting next to me (who wasn't going to say anything as I had already decided to buy one and well your not going to say thats a problem otherwise I would walk).

I gave it not a thought until some one I know who has one said that there is a known problem with third gear on them at the moment, then it all became clear.

I do hope that the newer ones being produced will have this ironed out really to save Honda a costly recall process and all us owners will have to wait our turn to get it fixed

No problems with 3rd

Picked mine up on the 24th September - so I haven't done many miles yet. But no problems at all with 3rd gear so far. Hopefully this continues.

Lets hope that all the ones coming out of the factory are now sorted.
